Friday Talking Points — Donald Trump Frontrunner

Yes, its strange but true — Donald Trump is now a frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president. Thats a pretty breathtaking place for the Republican Party to find itself in, isnt it? But it cannot be denied. Trump is sucking so much oxygen from the nomination race, its a wonder any of the other candidates are still drawing breath. Trump is not only the major subject all other candidates get asked about in interviews, hes also been climbing in the polling. Oh, sure, some of that is likely just name recognition, but not all of it. Like it or not (for the Republican Party), Trumps views on immigration are resonating with a certain slice of the partys base. This doesnt exactly bode well for any attempt by the Republican Party to reach out to Latino voters, of course.

In other news from the Republican race, apparently 16 candidates is not enough. One more Republican announced hes considering a presidential bid, which theHuffington Postreported withthe amusing headline: Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore To Run For President Because Why Not (funniest one weve yet seen in the 2016 race). Heck, why not 18? Or 20? The more the merrier!

Over on the Democratic side of things, Bernie Sanders is finally getting someserious press attention(instead of ridicule), and Hillary Clinton sat down with a reporter for a nationally-broadcast interview. This is news because it is the first time shes done so, despite campaigning for about three months now. She used the opportunity to point out that while shes disappointed with what Donald Trumps been saying about immigration, virtually the entire Republican field largely agrees that citizenship should be out of the question for undocumented immigrants currently in America. Hillaryslightly overstated the caseby painting all the candidates with the same brush (Lindsey Graham actually does support a path to citizenship), but Graham is polling at one or two percent so its easy to forget hes actually in the race. Hillarys main target was Jeb! Bush, who used to support a path to citizenship but now only supports a path to legal status — code words for they can stay and enjoy all benefits of citizenship except voting. This is a big flip-flop on Bushs part, and its good to see him getting called out on it.

In other election news, Alan Grayson is running for the Senate seat in Florida that Marco Rubio is vacating (to run for president). Grayson is always worth listening to, because hes of the tell it like it is school of politics (he postedan articleonHuffington Postthis week, if youve forgotten who he is and what he stands for).

Today was a historic day in South Carolina, as the Confederate battle flag was lowered for the final time on the statehouse grounds. This has been a swift reaction to the racist terrorist attack on a Charleston church, and while many credit Governor Nikki Haley for her leadership on the issue, what really drove the issue home (and forced Haley to act) was the image of the United States and South Carolina flags flying at half-staff while the Confederate flag flew at the top of its pole. Our guess is that one of those images is going to win a Pulitzer Prize this year, because it so perfectly framed the issue in visual terms.

At virtually the same time as Governor Haley was signing the take down the flag bill, the United States House of Representatives wasin a tizzyover an amendment which would have codified permission to fly the Confederate battle flag in national cemeteries and other federal properties. This amendment was inserted quietly and was backed by roughly 100 Republican House members, which derailed the bill the House was supposed to be passing, much to the chagrin of Speaker John Boehner. One of these supporters, in a jaw-dropping statement, said he didnt think the flag was racist, and that Confederate soldiers didnt have any thoughts about slavery. No thoughts? Really? Wow. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries was perhaps the best voice on the other side, as he spoke in front of an image of the flag in the House: Had this Confederate battle flag prevailed in a war 150 years ago, I would be here as a slave. Nancy Pelosi summedthe whole fracas upwith: Isnt that remarkable? A hundred of their members would vote against the bill. As Congresswoman McCollum said, the bill wasnt bad enough for them… they needed hatred in the bill as well.

The White House press secretarypiled onas well:

Right now, the Interior appropriations bill in the House is jammed up because a sizable number of House Republicans are eager to protect the status of the Confederate flag on National Park Service grounds. These are the same House Republicans who voted for a party leader who once described himself as David Duke without the baggage. These are the same congressional Republicans who have declined to criticize the race-baiting rhetoric of a leading Republican presidential candidate. So when you hear me say that congressional Republicans have an agenda that is out of step with the vast majority of Americans, this record, at least in part, is what Im referring to.

Boehner, realizing he was on shaky ground (especially on the anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment) was finally forced to abandon the bill, for now.

In other flag-coming-down news, the mayor of a small Alabama townregretfullyhad to take down a Christian flag from in front of city hall. The Freedom From Religion Foundation had written him a letter requesting he do so (and threatening a lawsuit if he didnt), and the mayor is now very sad he wont get to continue blatantly ignoring the Constitution any longer. Oklahomas governor, however, is standing firm indefying his states supreme court, which ruled the Ten Commandments monument at the statehouse must come down. Well be interested to see whether he gets cited for contempt of court any time soon.

In other religious/political news, the governor of Kansas hasbanned something which doesnt actually exist. Fearful that government jack-booted thugs were going to start throwing ministers in jail for refusing to perform gay marriages, Sam Brownback issued an executive order banning such tyranny. Except, of course, that nothing of the sort is ever going to happen in Kansas (or anywhere else in this country). Ministers and priests in Kansas can sleep better knowing that they are safe from something that was never going to happen, we suppose.

On the federal level, laws are being updatedto bring the benefits of marriage to all American citizens, no matter what state they live in.

The White Houseis hostingthe first-of-its-kind Tribal Youth Gathering, bringing Native American youths together to meet with the First Lady, cabinet officials, and others. The news media largely failed to report on this event, much preferring to write about how the Washington [Racist Slur] football team lost yet another round in its battle to keep its trademark.

In marijuana news, the state of Washington is bringing in roughlytwice the tax moneythey had projected ($70 million instead of the $36 million estimate). As Tom Angell of the group Marijuana Majority put it:

These impressive numbers are likely to catch the eyes of policymakers in other states that could use a little help closing their budget gaps. While this amount of money isnt nearly enough to run a whole state with, these are real dollars that can now be spent on things like schools, healthcare and road repair instead of going straight into the pockets of the drug dealers who controlled the marijuana market prior to legalization. And this is only the first year. Expect to see even more revenue generated — and more jobs created — in the next few years.

One can only hope other states are paying attention.

In international news, Greece is melting down, Chinas stock market saw a bubble pop, and John Kerry is still talking with the Iranians (but sounds like hes running out of patience). OK, thats enough of a weekly roundup, lets move on to the awards, shall we?

Medical marijuana has always had a serious Catch-22 problem. Its medicine it
s supporters say, but the federal government responds: There are no scientific studies. However, when such scientific studies are attempted, up until very recently they were told: You cant study that, its not medicine, its a dangerous drug. Catch-22. You can only reclassify it as medicine if there is science to back it up, but you cannot do scientific studies on it because it is not medicine.

This week, Democratic House members Earl Blumenauer and Sam Farrmovedto break this logjam, even if the change might wind up being mostly symbolic. Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, the most serious classification there is. Even drugs like crystal methamphetamine are listed on Schedule II. Marijuanas inclusion as the worst of the worst has always been political, of course, and the real answer is to just reschedule it as a Schedule II (or even Schedule III) substance — or to deschedule it entirely and just hand it over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, where it really belongs.

Blumenauer and Farrs bill doesnt take either of these steps. Instead, it would create a special sub-classification of Schedule I-R for marijuana, which would at least separate it from the other substances listed on Schedule I.

Its not the perfect answer, but any attempt to make the situation better should be applauded. If your main complaint about medical marijuana is there arent enough studies, then why not make it easier to actuallyperformsuch studies? Both Blumenauer and Farr have become leaders on the issue, and for their proposed change to the law they both deserve this weeksMost Impressive Democrat Of The Weekaward.

The insanity of the War On Weed will have to be chipped away at relentlessly, one bit at a time, and this could be an important step in that process. Kudos to Farr and Blumenauer for continuing to fight this important fight in Congress.

[Congratulate Representative Earl Blumenauer onhis House contact page, and Representative Sam Farr onhis House contact page, to let them know you appreciate their efforts.]

You know what? Nobody disappointed us all that much this week.

If weve overlooked anyone richly deserving theMost Disappointing Democrat Of The Weekaward, please let us know about it in the comments, as always.

Before we get started, we have a program announcement to make. Well be in Phoenix next week, attending the Netroots Nation get-together of liberal bloggers and activists. Because well be busy, this column wont appear again until two Fridays from now. Hopefully well be able to present some interesting columns next week anyway (were working on it, but cant absolutely make promises yet), so there should be something for you to read, just not a Friday Talking Points column. So, fair warning to everyone.

OK, with that out of the way, lets get to this weeks talking points. Due to the 800-pound gorilla that is Donald Trumps ego, almost all of our talking points this week are intended to make fun of both The Donald and the Republican Party leaders currently quaking in their boots over how they found themselves in this particular situation. Enjoy!

It is now impossible to deny that Donald Trump has become one of the frontrunners for the Republican nomination for president. I know many Republicans would prefer to treat Trump as some sort of freakshow on the sidelines, but thats not what the polls are saying. Hes polling in first or second place both in state-level polls and in national polls right now. That is not some sideshow — that is the very definition of frontrunner. Republicans may tell themselves that Trump cant possibly be out in front of much more serious candidates, but the reality is that hes now a frontrunner in the Republican nomination race. Deal with it.

Donald Trump is not just a frontrunner in the race for the Republican nomination, hes actually become the face of the Republican Party. Think about it — whenever any Republican candidate gets interviewed, what is one of the first questions asked? What do you think of what Trump said? To put this another way: Trump speaks, then all other Republicans react. By definition, Trump is speaking for the party now, and everyone else is just playing catch-up. Establishment Republicans can deny it until theyre bright red in the face, but it doesnt change the fact that Donald Trump is now the most prominent voice in their party — Trump is indeed the face of the Republican Party.

I hasten to remind Republicans that this is just round one. Trump isnt going to fade quietly away or anything — its not in the mans nature to do so. Just when Republicans get over one inflammatory comment from Trump and think theyve safely navigated the minefield, Trumps going to pop up and address some other subject with equally-inflammatory language. The Republican Trump problem isnt going to be confined to immigration and losing Latino voters. Therell be a lot more issues exploding from Trumps mouth in the future. Hes got enough money to stay in the race as long as he likes, and the media isnt going to suddenly decide not to cover him anymore. This is just the beginning of a very long road, folks.

And to send Republicans screaming into the night….

In arecent interviewwith theWashington Post, Donald Trump hinted that he not only might not support the eventual Republican nominee (if he loses his bid), but that he might actually consider a third-party run as an Independent. Just picture for one moment what that is likely to do to Republicans chances for winning the White House next year. Trump himself said that so many people want to see him mount a third-party bid — everybody wants him to do so. I dont know about everybody, but Im sure that pretty much every Democrat would indeed cheer if Trump ran as an Independent!

This needs to be repeatedly pointed out to the media, because so far theyre not doing a terrific job of fact-checking.

Donald Trump isflat-out wrongabout immigrants, of course. The facts plainly show that immigrants arelesslikely to commit crimes, andlesslikely to be incarcerated than the native-born population. Those are the facts. Trump is just as wrong about immigrant crime as he is about virtually everything else, which should come as no real surprise.

Most Republicans essentially agree with Trump

Hillary slightly misspoke, but shes got a good point.

Hillary Clinton is essentially right — most Republican candidates for president may not agree with Donald Trumps inflammatory statements, but at heart they agree on what policies should be enacted to solve the problem of immigration. Other than Lindsey Graham, I dont know of any Republican running for president who supports a path to citizenship for the 11 million people already in this country without papers. Jeb Bushusedto support this, but now he doesnt, as Hillary very accurately pointed out. Now hes for a path to legal status, which would forever deny people of ever participating in American elections. And Jebs actuallymorereasonable than most of the Republicans running, many of whom wont even go as far as Jeb. So while Republicans timidly denounce Trump, weeks later, they are essentially in agreement with him over what should be done about the problem. Once again, Trump is indeed the face of the Republican Party.

And finally, because Jeb! is probably feeling a little left out this week…

Jeb Bush apparently has the answer to the problems the American middle class is facing:work harder! Incredibly, thats exactly what he said recently in an interview. While standing firm for four percent growth, Bush tells Americas workers we have to be a lot more productive, which means that people need to work longer hours. Got that, middle class Americans? Your main problem is that you have been slacking off. Why not go out and get a second job? Heck, maybe put the kids to work, too. Because in Jeb!s America, thats what you have to look forward to. Not a raise in the minimum wage, not expanded overtime pay, not guaranteed sick leave, not fair pay for women — instead all your proble
ms can be solved by working more hours. So what are you waiting for, slackers?Get back to work!

RUNNING PREGNANT : SECOND TRIMESTER

THE FIRST TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY WAS FILLED WITH STRANGE BODY CHANGES, TIREDNESS AND THE REALIZATION OF BEING PREGNANT, GETTING OVER THE SOCK AND STRESSES OF WHAT WAS TO COME. ALL IN ALL DURING MY SECOND TRIMESTER I HAVE EXPERIENCED MY PREGNANCY WITH MUCH MORE ENTHUSIASM AND EXCITEMENT.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, midwife or nurse. The information expressed in the series Running Pregnant – By JBRobinBog.com should not be taken as medical advice. Please consult your doctor before running during pregnancy and postpartum.

In the beginning of the second trimester I expected to feel better in a flash, which I did, for a whole week, in which I attempted and completer a 21 km race. After that my body took a dip again struggling to recover and to get back on track. You can read about that here:  CLICK HERE!

By week 18 things started to look good, I ran a total of 253km during my second trimester and I have to say it was n pushed every month to get to the 100Km per month. That was the goal I set for myself, to do a 100Km per month. But in December I fell short after getting sick and having to sit out for 3 weeks.

I had 2 little incidents during my second trimester that made it clear once again that looking after your body while pregnant is very important.Just adding that non of the incidents had anything to do with running, so sorry haters you had calm down and stop pointing fingers.

First: I ended up getting Gastro while on holiday, remember to make double sure with what you eat and drink, if your not sure about the water, rather buy than drink from the tap. Your nutrition is very important , not just for you and Baby, but also for your training and daily tasks. Without it youll just feel shitty and weak.Second:I got a urinary track infection – bu more about that later.

Your second trimester is the best they say. Ill only be able to confirm this after the entire pregnancy though, but to be honest it was great. My energy was really back, sleeping, eating, morning sickness and running was definitely easier as I had figured out my rhythm so to say.

Below you can have a read how I would describe my Second trimester whilst running.

Yes Wee, and even though your say that sentence fast its not the same feeling as sitting on a swing, Instead it is constantly having to visit the bathroom. I found that it was really bad in the first trimester and then settled down later n the second trimester. When your pregnant the blood flow to your kidneys increases by up to 35 to 60%. The extra blood flow makes your kidneys produce up to 25% more urine soon after conception. This increased urine production peaks by about 9 to 16 weeks of the pregnancy, but is said to decrease again in later weeks of pregnancy.

Whilst running my bladder control has gotten allot better in the second trimester, I made a point to not drink anything at least and hour before I had a run scheduled and I found that drinking anything apart from water made me wee allot more. Especially coffee, Caffeine weakens the pelvic floor and will add to oopsies whilst running or even in general.

I found myself having to go to the bathroom quite often in the beginning of my second trimester and then when I get there, theres nothing or hardly a drop! My body was changing I thought and brushed it off as a simple annoyance that comes with Pregnancy. Apart from pregnancy, frequent urination can be caused by other factors including urinary tract infections. This is what happened to me, I ended up getting a urinary tract infection. Be sure to stay alert of these things as having a urinary tract infection during pregnancy is not good.I ended up getting really bad headaches and very bad nausea, the doctor reassured me it would go away with the medicine she gave.

This is how I countered the Wee dilemma:

Dont drink any fluids 60min before a schedules run

Stick to water rather that other caffeinated hot or cold drinks

Still have a back up bathroom on route of your run to be safe.

But dont stop drinking water for fear of the Wee. Its important to stay Hydrated.

No Pregnancy is the same. All bodies react diffidently – some baby bumps grow fast and others slower. I personally felt like my Belly was popping really fast and this definitely felt weird during my running.

Looking at my pictures in the first post I cant see too big a difference in my bump, compared to the one Im sporting now.

After running a 21km my body definitely protested and I got myself a belly support band fromCarriwella product sold here in SA at most pharmacies and baby stores. It helped allot and it gave me just that extra less jiggle, if that makes any sense. The band helped during my runs. But unfortunately there was two issues I had with the band. One: my tights just refused to stay up. The two fabrics were just to slippery against each other. Two:The band was too tight around my lower abdomen when I ran, this caused pressure onto my bladder as it became full, causing leakage. What I did was wear the band upside down to decrease this. I just want to say that I did buy the band in the right size, so that was not the issue.

I wore the belt during all my runs and at one Race it was very hot and I felt so uncomfortable, last minute I decided to take the band off. During the race I felt fine but afterwards my back was killing me, I hadnt realized how much my body had gotten used to the band and that removing it was actually a mistake. So the band might not have been wonderful for my bladder but worked for my back.

Otherwise it is still a great product, just maybe not for running. I still wear it under my everyday clothing for extra support, it makes me feel much more comfortable when wearing tight fitting tops.

Then I got a message from a fellow runner. She explained to me that she had run up until 3 days before her son was born, all with the help of these two running support belts she had. I had seen them before but they were completely out of my budget and at the time I was not sure how much I would need them. She was so kind as to donate her Belts to me and to this day I cannot be more thankful. They are amazing! Amazing , Amazing!

Unfortunately they dont have any branding on them so Im not sure where she got them – she mentioned that they could possibly be from Carriwell but that shed had them for so long, shes not sure. This band changed my running and I think its going to become a big assent in my third trimester. Im going to do a post just about the belts, so keep and eye out for it, Ill try and see where you can buy them because if your Bump is as big as mine its a must must!

At about 24 weeks I had gained a total of 10Kg. My starting weight was 55kg and I had now gone up to 65kg. At first my Belly was only growing forward, I had noticed some extra weight on my thighs and then later started to get a little rounder at my love handles as my belly was getting bigger. Not that I had a issue with the weight gain anymore. It was also as if my body had thrown off water as my belly was less Puffy if that makes any sense so you could see more definition, hahawhatever definition was left

The only thing I realized with the extra weight was that while running my legs were working considerably harder. Thinking back now, its a kinda DUH Moment. The extra weight and bump changes the way I moved when Running. My gait was changing and as a result old injuries and other things were starting to peek out their heads.

– ITB coming back: this was probably due to my hip movement changing and my tummy muscles not giving as much support towards my hips and over all balance.

– Stiff calves and Shin pain: this was definitely due to the extra weight. Unfortunately a good stretch is all that could be done here. Along with some strength exercises.

I was then running with myASICS FuseX Lytes,I love these shoes and it was sad to think that they were not giving me the necessary support any more. I switched to myASICS Fuji AttackTrail running shoes as they were the only Running shoes I had that could give me the best support for the changes.

Im now running with my newASICS Dynamisas the ASICS Fuji Attacks are a little heavy, adding to the weight for my poor legs. ASICS Dynamis features FlyteFoam™, with their premium midsole, along with BOA lacing and DynaPanel for cushioning, a very snug fit and I must say reliable support. Its a very comfortable shoe and I have had no problem running with them sofar. The shoe is for a neutral to over pronation, giving me the extra needed support. The BOA Lacing also makes it very easy for me to tie my shoes properly without the hassle of my belly getting in the way, which is perfect.

Unfortunately you cant really stop gaining weight, but keep to a good diet and stay hydrated

have a look at your shoe support if aches and pain become apparent the weight might be changing your gait

Do a few extra squats and calve raises. Remember to keep doing your additional weight training to help your body adapt to the changes

So I started realizing that when I drank water after a good run, I would end up having less bathroom visits even if I kept drinking water. Im not a doctor and Im not sure if this is a possibility, but it make sense to me that I might have been somewhat dehydrated after a run or just a little more than usual. So I would ensure that I had plenty of water after each run and also stay away from caffeinated drinks. Caffeine will dehydrate you.

I also got myself a few sachets of Re-hydrate. I would have one every now and then when I would feel sluggish and weak. The running can not only take the fluids out of you but also some necessary electrolytes. When you sweat you loose fluids and electrolytes, so this actually counts for any exercise you end up doing. Be sure to follow the instructions on the back on how to prep the Re-hydrate, if you make it too concentrated it can be a little tough on your body.

The term originated in 1872 when an English doctor named John Braxton Hicks described the contractions that occur before real labor. Braxton Hicks contractions can begin as early as the second trimester. However, they are most commonly experienced in the third trimester. When this happens, the muscles of the uterus tighten for approximately 30 to 60 seconds, and sometimes as long as two minutes.

Braxton Hicks are also called practice contractions because they are a preparation for the real event and allow the opportunity to practice the breathing exercises taught in childbirth classes. I found that I started to get braxton hicks contractions whilst running. The doctor said it could be a sigh that my uterus is getting annoyed for lack of better explanation, and that I should consider maybe lessening my distances I run at a time. Braxston hicks should be painless and its really just a weird feeling of your tummy muscles tightening.

I now see them as warning sign that I need to take a break. I found that when I move too much or have a active day its a way for my body to say- please chill out!

Run shorter distances. I found that every time I get to 8km my tummy contracts, so I now opt to do less than 8km at a time. Very boring since I love the longer distances but unfortunately it has to be done.

How much is allot? If you feel like your getting them really regularly, discuss it with your doctor, its always hard to know when something is happening allot or normal if youve never experienced it before, and I have to say it is a REALLY weird feeling!

As I move into my Third Trimester now I can feel things getting harder, especially after taking a sick break for 3 weeks. My plan now is to stay fit in whichever way is comfortable,My belly s getting nice and big and I can feel things becoming harder. Im going to mix up my running with some Swimming maybe once or twice a week, I just need to find a swimming cap to go over these dreads!

Let me know if you have any questions or experienced something differently, would love to hear what you have to say, Maybe I left something out that you have a question about!

How Lady Bird Director Greta Gerwigs Love Letter to Her Childhood Became an Oscars Frontrunner (Exclusive

Oh, is that a Coke?! Greta Gerwig exclaims. A tinkering tray carrying — yup — a glass of Coca-Cola has just arrived to her hotel suite. Im having a side conversation with the actress Saoirse Ronan about their new film,, as Gerwig gleefully intercepts the Coke and takes a sip. Oh

She dont give a sh*t about the movie right now, Ronan throws a thumb in Gerwigs direction, drawing her attention. He was saying lovely things about the film and youre like,Mmm, fizzy! Bubbly!

Lady Bird, which Gerwig wrote and with which she makes her directorial debut, centers on high school senior Christine McPherson, self-nicknamed Lady Bird, as she navigates Catholic school boys, college applications and mother-daughter drama in circa 2003 Sacramento. The irony is Gerwig gives such a sh*t about the film that its the first thing anyone mentions about working with her. Beanie Feldstein, who co-stars as Lady Birds best friend, Julie, tells me, She just cared about it so much, and so we all cared about it so much.

Listening to Gerwigs cast describe her directing style is like, well, listening to Gerwig describe a soda. Bubbly. Fizzy. Magical. There was such a natural sense of support and love. [She] made it such a safe space, Feldstein says. It was like this little bubble. Lucas Hedges, who plays Lady Birds boyfriend, Danny, says, The most unique thing about working with Greta is that it didnt feel like I was working with adirector…It was never technical, it felt much more fluid and colorful and, like, it was a special relationship we had that was, like, meeting up with my friend after school to work on a movie.

Ive always wanted to direct, Gerwig herself explains. I kind of felt like I used my time on sets and doing different jobs as, like, my film school.

In addition to her myriad onscreen credits, wide-ranging roles in mumblecore indies and studio rom-coms and prestige period pieces, Gerwig had written screenplays for the Noah Baumbach-directedFrances HaandMistress America, among others. WithLady Bird, she knew she had to take the leap, despite any early hesitations. Its like having a child, where youre like,Someone else could probably raise them better, but they will be raised in my home, Gerwig laughs. And even if I get weird cereal, its going to be fine.

And give them Coca-Cola at 9:00 a.m., Ronan chimes in.

Yeah, Gerwig grins. But it felt like if I didnt do it now, I was never going to do it.

Like Lady Bird, Gerwig was born and raised in the Sacramento suburbs, where she attended an all-girls Catholic high school, listened to Dave Matthews Band and dreamed of studying theater in New York. (She eventually majored in English and philosophy at Barnard College.) Gerwig did indeed mine her adolescence to write her semi –semi– autobiographical script, but Lady Bird is not Greta Gerwig. And Gerwig was no Lady Bird.

The truth is I wasnt like Lady Bird, she recalls. Like, I was a very rule-following kind of gold star-getting kid. I colored inside the lines. I mean, I never made anyone call me by a different name or dyed my hair bright red when I was in high school.

Sitting across from Gerwig and Ronan at The London West Hollywood, though, they bear more than a passing resemblance, especially with both dressed in high-collars — Gerwigs a polka dot dress, Ronans a rust-colored turtleneck — and Ronans blonde hair bundled atop her head, nearly matching the length of Gerwigs cropped cut. Physically, at least, they could absolutely be sisters. When casting Saoirse, I ask Gerwig, were there aspects of yourself that you saw in her?

I felt like I didnt understand the character until she started saying the lines, she says. I think writing it was like, creating this flawed but amazing [and] when she started reading, it was so funny and it was heartfelt and it was just so sincere. I was like,Thats her! Thats who it is! Thats our ! Thats our Lara Croft: Tomb Raider!

Ill never be Lara Croft, Ronan deadpans.

I dont know why I brought that up, Gerwig giggles.

Ronan admits she did find inspiration in Gerwig as she brought Lady Bird to life. The one thing that I wanted to incorporate from you, she says, just cause I love it so much and I did think it as totally right for Lady Bird is the way you move, the way you do this– Ronan poses, her arms akimbo and elbows pointed outward, creating a hunched sort of physical awkwardness. I do it a bit, anyway, she adds. Like, we lead with our elbows and were both quite gangly.

Weve got some legs and arms, Gerwig agrees.

Lady Bird may be the star of this story — a star in general, she would tell you — but the movie is more than simply the coming-of-age of a discontented creative type.Lady Birdis equally about her rigid but devoted mom, Marion McPherson (Laurie Metcalf), and their alternatingly prickly, sweet relationship. Its a mother-daughter love story, Gerwig puts it.

We talked about it a lot, like, this is the worst moment of their relationship, she says. And theres so much love underneath. Theres a base of love, and they got on so well, Saoirse and Laurie, so it was underneath it, even if what you were seeing was conflict.

Laurie makes you feel quite safe, as a person, Ronan jumps in. I feel very calm and protected when shes around, so I think when you have that relationship with someone, it allows you to go to the darker places and scream and shout at them, because you know it will be fine. Actually, I think thats what Lady Bird and her mom have. They know it will be OK.

Gerwigs own mother, Christine, a nurse like Marion, was one of the first people to see the film. They, like, loved it. They were crying and called me on speaker phone and were just, you know, very, very emotional, she recalls of showing the movie to her family. The heart of it is real, but then they know what I made up and how much of it isnt real. WhenLady Birdhad its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, Gerwigs mom was sitting next to her in the theater.

Theres this moment where [Lady Birds father] Larry says to Lady Bird, You both have such strong personalities, Gerwig recalls. And my mom goes,Thats right! Yes!

Ronansmam, Monica, who lives in Dublin where Ronan grew up, hadnt seen the movie yet at the time. Shesdesperateto see it and I was going to try to get her to go see it in Ireland, but I want to see it with her, Ronan says. Because shes going to bawl her eyes out. Shes going tosob. Shes going to love it.

Oh, and also, shes bringing over a present for you, she suddenly turns to Gerwig.

No, Ronan laughs. The first time she met her, Greta was coming over because I was getting my hair done and mam had just arrived and she was like, Im just going to pop out to the shops and get the guys some bits. She comes back and shes got, like, boxes of biscuits and pub cakes and a huuuge cake. She just wants to feed everyone.

WithLady Birdnow playing in theaters, its clear many people love it. The movie officially beat outToy Story 2to become Rotten Tomatos best-reviewed film and is already collecting awards season accolades: Four nominations at the Gotham Awards, including the Audience Award and Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. (Ronan won Best Actress.) Four Independent Spirit Award nominations, including Best Feature. The National Board of Review named it one of the Top Films of the Year and awarded Gerwig Best Director.

Lady Birdis no longer an Oscar hopeful, but a confirmed Best Picture contender for next years Academy Awards, with Ronan and Metcalf practically guaranteed slots for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and increasingly optimistic buzz for Gerwig for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, all of which has her cast downright giddy.

Itsin-sane, Feldstein giggles. It felt magical when we were making it, but the fact that that magic transcends to the audience is just all you could ask for really.

Hedges agrees, but always knew it would work out this way. If it didnt, Id be really confused, he says. It makes so much sense that this movie is b
eing received in the way that it is, because when we were on set, it really felt like everyone that came in, the second they came in contact with Greta, it was, like, glowing. It was magical. Just like a glass of regular Coca-Cola.

What Alabamas GOP Senate Frontrunner Told Me Should Scare The Daylights Out Of You

Roy Moore said homosexuality is not a public right and Islam conflicts with the First Amendment.

Ive had the opportunity twice over the past several years to interview the currentAlabama GOP Senate frontrunner Roy Mooreat length and flesh out some of his, um, ideas. And let me tell you: If elected, this guy will be the kookiest, most dangerous man to serve in the U.S. Senate in many years, not to mention that hed consistently cause embarrassing media spectacles, as if we dont have enough of that.

Moore told me point blank that the U.S. is a Christian nation and affirmed the statement that laws themselves are superseded by God. He claimed that Islam is a faith that conflicts with the First Amendment of the Constitution, and insisted that, even after sodomy laws have been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, homosexuality doesnt have any kind of public right.

Mooreheads into a runoff in the GOP Senate primary raceon Tuesday, leading in pollsagainst incumbent Luther Strange, who was appointed to the Senate seat after Jeff Sessions left it vacant to join the Trump administration, which triggered a special election.

While Donald Trump himself is backing Strange at the urging of the GOP establishment in the Senate, his former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and , which Bannon heads once again, are battling Trump on this race, strongly backing Moore. Sarah Palincampaigned for Moorethis week in Alabama, proudly opining that, Roy Moore was deplorable before it was cool to be deplorable.

The alt-right is all in, labeling Moore a disruptor. Thats code for the very bigotry Moore espouses and which they support, including against Muslims, people of color (Moorerecently referredto Native-Americans and Asian-American as reds and yellows, respectively) and many other groups.

Moore in fact represents the nexus between some of the hard-right evangelicals who support Trump and the white supremacists that also helped elect Trump and whom Trump gave a boost to after Charlottesville. Christian nationalism, as Jack Jenkins, senior religion reporter at Think Progress, explained, is very much among the driving forces in Trumps base. Moore, as an anti-establishment bigot, is a guy in the mold of Trump. Thats why, according to the Washington Post, Trumphad to be convincedby several GOP senators to campaign for Strange this weekend:

..Sen. Bob Corker whose own relationship with Trump was frayed by a summer of curt criticism paid a visit last Friday to the Oval Office, where he delivered a blunt request at the end of a broader conversation.

Youve got to go, the Tennessee Republican told Trump, according to people briefed on the exchange. We need you there.

Moore wasfamously removedin 2003 as the chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court (a position to which he was elected in 2000) by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary in a case that went up to the U.S. Supreme Court for refusing to take down a Ten Commandments monument from the courthouse rotunda which hed installed there. He ran for chief justice again in 2012, and won, butwas permanently suspended in 2016by a judicial ethics panel because he ordered probate judges in Alabama to violate federal court decisions that ruled gays and lesbians have the right to marry.

Between his two stints on the Alabama Supreme Court I interviewed Moore on my radio program onSiriusXM, once in 2007, after he made an unsuccessful run for the Alabama governorship, and then in 2011, when he was mulling a presidential run (but instead made his successful run for Alabama Supreme Court chief justice the following year).

In our 2007 interview, Moore was enraged that current Democratic National Committee Deputy Chair Keith Ellison, a Minnesota House member who in 2006 became the first Muslim-American elected to Congress, had been sworn in that year on a Quran Thomas Jeffersons Quran, to be precise and had publicly attacked Ellison.

[Islam is] a faith that conflicts with the First Amendment of the Constitution, he said in our interview. The Constitution and Declaration of Independence has [sic] a direct reference to the Holy Scriptures. (There is in fact no reference to the bible in either.)

When Moore came on my radio program again in 2011, I asked him, Are laws themselves superseded by God?

I think youre correct in saying that, he answered. This is a Christian nation by the fact that 90% of the churches in America are Christian churches and its certainly founded upon Christian principles. The supreme law of the land is the Constitution of the United States which recognizes many of those principles. Our freedom to believe what we want comes from God. When it comes from God, no man or no court, can take it away. Thats a God-given right under the Declaration of Independence, which is law itself.

In 2002, Moorewrote a 9-0 decisionin which the Alabama Supreme Court gave custody of three teenagers to their heterosexual father rather than their lesbian mother after the parents divorced.

Homosexuality, Moore wrote in the decision, is an inherent evil, and if a person openly engages in such a practice, that fact alone would render him or her an unfit parent. Moore went on to declare that homosexuality is abhorrent, immoral, detestable, a crime against nature, and a violation of the laws of nature.

I asked Moore about that opinion and how it held up a decade later. He said he stuck by it. When I inquired about where in the law or in the Constitution it stated homosexuality is an inherent evil, he said, I quoted the law. The [British] common law designated homosexuality as an inherent evil. The Constitution is predicated on the [British] common law. Im quoting the history of the [British] common law upon which our Constitution is based.

Moore then said that even after the Supreme Court struck down sodomy bans across the country in 2003, it didnt change his view or his decision.

What the court said is that you couldnt punish [sodomy] criminally, he said. The court did not say that sodomy or homosexuality had any kind of public right.

Now Moore could win the GOP primary in the Senate race in Alabama. This may give the Democrats the best shot theyve had in many years of taking the seat, as former U.S. attorney Doug Jones would face off against Moore on December 12. AnEmerson College pollhas Jones within striking distance in the general election, though its a tough slog in Alabama for any Democrat to win statewide. Jones recently receivedthe endorsementof . Joe Biden, who recorded robocalls for Jones,is headed to Alabamato stump for him.

But white nationalists and the alt-right, including Breitbart and Bannon, see this race as a referendum on their power vs. the GOP establishment. Theyre putting everything theyve got into this race to install yet another racist bigot in the U.S. Senate and remind Trump just where the power truly lies in his base.

Relax Everybody Nobody Is A 2016 Frontrunner Yet

I dont know if it was the anticipation of being snowed in today, or the zany highs of award season reaching their peak with last nights Academy Awards ceremony, but this past weekend was a looney-tune time for Washingtons professional 2016 Speculasturbators. Did you know that we already have frontrunners for 2016? As in

The current frontrunner for the GOP nod in 2016? Boy named Rand.

Rubio is the 2016 GOP frontrunner again

Conn Carroll (@conncarroll)March 3, 2014

Hey, I just double-checked, but its apparently only March in the year 2014, so everyone can feel free to just chill, for Gods sake.

Look, yall. I aint even trying to put the kibosh on discussing the relative strengths and weaknesses of potential 2016 candidates. Im even OK with making comparisons. But we have to stop abusing this poor word, frontrunner, before the English-languages version of Sarah MacLachlan starts making sad teevee commercials about it. There is no frontrunner at this point. There isnt even a race.

But once the race is enjoined, well still really need some new rules governing the use of this word. As things are, we deploy the word frontrunner way too readily, using it to describe everybody from candidates who are clearly dominating a race, to candidates who have snagged a slight lead over a pack of contenders, to — as in the above cases — candidates who arent even candidates. Its important to remember that when Chris Cillizza or Conn Carroll declare a frontrunner, theyve not taken the pulse of America or done anything quantitative to make that determination. They approach it with this kind of thinking: Which prospective candidate, if I named them the frontrunner, would give my personal brandz moar klout and zazz.

But look, Im trimming my own excesses and taking responsibility for my own abuses, as well. Back in the 2012 GOP primary, as the fortunes of the various candidates waxed and waned over the months, I passed around the term frontrunner a little too promiscuously. So, now, Im taking up the cause of HuffPost Pollsters own Mark Blumenthal, who wants this term to be used more realistically, so we stop hurting this poor word frontrunner so much! Here are some rules, from Mark Blumenthal:

1. First, to be a frontrunner you need to at least have a real lead, which means statistical significance in some form. But again thats the easy part.

2. Second, we really need a different term to distinguish the true, dominant, likely-to-win frontrunner from a candidate that enjoys an early lead thats quite possibly temporary.

My advice is to consider using terms like ahead of the pack or so hot right now or I get sprung when I think of [NAME OF CANDIDATE], and let the truly dominant candidates take frontrunner. Because, honey, you donotwant to have headlines like,Newt Gingrich, frontrunneron your permanent record. Oof.

Oscar Best Actor Frontrunner Gary Oldman: Winston Churchill Role In Darkest Hour Was An Exercise In Stamina

Gary Oldman, who spent more than 200 hours in the makeup chair to become the iconic British politician Winston Churchill, and at the films end had carried around half of his body weight with the prosthetics that added 10 pounds each day, not surprisingly saidDarkest Hourprovided his most physically challenging role.

Oldman garnered a Best Actor nomination today and is considered a lock to win the Oscar.Focus FeaturesDarkest Hourscored six noms overall including for Best Picture.

Oldman, who has been acting for 36 years, was nominated once before in the category in 2012 forTinker Tailor Soldier Spy.This past weekend he took home the SAG Award.

He said this role for him was an exercise in stamina it was just the coming in four hours before everyone else and then you are working a 10-12 hour day and then it was an hour to remove (the synthetic skin) in the evening. The days were long and you are the motor of the film, so to speak, working in almost every scene, so it was a question if I would have the stamina to do it. The actual wearing of that material is like a synthetic skin. It was not restrictive. Once its on, you are not aware of it. I do have a tough skin, I have to say that. It seems that my skin is very resilient to it. But I enjoyed playing him so much that it just got me through.

Darkest Hourfrom directorJoe Wrighttook what could have been historically dry material and turned it into an edge-of-seat dramatic thriller. The film was written by Anthony McCarten; it was produced by Douglas Urbanski, Lisa Bruce and McCarten.

A first clip of Oldman as Churchill was seen in March of last year at Cinema Con and the entire room gasped when they saw him in full makeup in the small clip. Not only does he look like the great man who averted Nazi tyranny, he had his cadence and tone of speech down pat. Not surprisingly, Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick were nominated in the Make-Up and Hairstyling category this morning.

The movie, produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, takes place over the first five weeks of Churchills time as Prime Minister when Hitler began his invasion of Europe.

Oldman said he studied old news reel footage and read clippings to prepare for the role.

There are over 800 books written on the man and thats not counting the 50 books he wrote himself. There is a wealth of material, said Oldman. I went to very specific things because you could just get choice blind. I sort of concentrated on this particular period of his life and then like any character you start to piece him together.

Who Is Josh Hawley? Republican Senate Hopeful Blames Sex Trafficking on Sexual Revolution

Josh Hawley, the Republican frontrunner in the Missouri Senate primary to take on Democratic incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill, garnered headlines Wednesday after it was revealed that he connected the issue of sex trafficking with the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 70s.

We have a human trafficking crisis in our state and in this city and in our country because people are willing to purchase women, young women, and treat them like commodities, Hawley said in a speech in December as first reported inThe Kansas City Star. There is a market for it. Why is there? Because our culture has completely lost its way. The sexual revolution has led to exploitation of women on a scale that we would never have imagined, never have imagined.

The remarks came during a Pastors and Pews event hosted by the Missouri Renewal Project, a faith-based organization focused on conservative Christians.

The Hawley campaign sought to clarify his remarks in a statement toNewsweek.

Lets get serious: sex trafficking is driven by male demand and the subjugation of women. In the 1960s and 70s, it became okay for Hollywood and the media to treat women as objects for male gratification. And that demeaning view of women has helped fuel harassment, inequality, and yes, sex trafficking, said Kelli Ford, spokeswoman for the Hawley campaign.

The news of Hawleys controversial speech came less than a week after Courtland Sykes, another Missouri Republicanvying for the Senate nomination, referred to feminists as career-obsessed banshees and added that he wants to come home to a home-cooked dinner at six every night that his wife fixes.

The comments from the top Republican candidate have reminded some of the 2012 Missouri Senate race, in which McCaskill was expected to have a tight battle against then-candidate Todd Akin, beforeAkin saidthat, in cases of legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down. McCaskill went on to win by nearly 16 percentage points.

These comments do nothing but foster a Todd Akin-style culture war that the GOP will lose to a formidable female incumbent, Austin Petersen, a third candidate for the Republican nomination, toldThe Kansas City Star.

Hawley, who is currently serving in his first term as attorney general of Missouri, was the top GOP recruit andselected by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnellto challenge McCaskill in what is expected to be one of the closest Senate races in the 2018 election cycle.
