Whether using the pre-installed version or an upgraded version of the current model, the newCanon Log^feature enables theEOS 5D Mark IVcamera to record 4K and HD video files with expansive dynamic range and wide exposure latitude, making it simple to coordinate color settings with other Canon cameras in multi-camera set-ups. Its ideally suited for extensivepost-production processing.

Canon Log helps record images for post-processing that feature a wide dynamic range. Captured 4K and Full HD video files feature suppressed contrast and sharpness and increased dynamic range of up to 800% or 12 stops (at ISO 400 or above). This means more detail in the highlights, enhanced details in the shadows, and because of its balanced image quality the flexibility to work with color saturation and tone to create a specific look, or to match other recorded media. A View Assist setting provides a preview on the LCD monitor of how an image may look with post-processing characteristics.

The Canon Log feature includes two Look Up Tables (LUTs) that correct the recorded images gamma and color space when viewed on an external monitor. WithCanon Log10 to Wide DR LUT, the video file is converted to Wide Dynamic Range gamma, with well-preserved highlights and shadow detail. WithCanon Log10 to ITU-R BT.709 LUT, the file is converted to ITU-R BT.709, providing conventional camcorder specs for viewing in a color space consistent with an HDTV.

While these tables show LUTs based on 10-bit input, the output for anEOS 5D Mark IVcamera featuringCanon Logis 8-bit.

When Canon Log is set, horizontal noise stripes may appear in movies depending on subject or shooting conditions. It is recommended to shoot a few test movies and check before the actual shooting. Note that noise may become more noticeable especially when you apply strong contrast during color grading of the shot movie.

Horizontal noise stripes tend to appear when the subject is dark and flat or [Peripheral illum.] is set to [Enable]. This noise may also appear when ISO speed is relatively low, such asat ISO 400.

When the noise is noticeable, it is recommended to set [Peripheral illum.] to [Disable], shoot in brighter exposure, and perform brightness adjustment during color grading. Also, noise may be decreased when you shoot at ISO speed lower than ISO 400 (even though the dynamic range will be narrowed).

EOS Academia program promotes 3D printing at universities and research institutions

EOS (Krailling, Germany), which supplies industrial3D printing(also known as additive manufacturing) solutions for metals and polymers, is expanding its Academia program to promote powder-based 3D printing at universities and research institutions.

After registering, participating institutions can benefit from exclusive access to regular updates from theadditive manufacturingworld, such as sample applications, white papers, and various activities designed for the academic field. They will also get access to three new packages. The combination of specialized training with the practical use of their own 3D printing systems will enable both researchers and lecturers to experience the host of possibilities this technology offers. As such, they can actively teach their knowledge to others. At the same time, universities can increase their appeal as centers of education by utilizing the expertise they have gained to offer a corresponding range of courses on key 3D printing technology topics.

For more than 20 years, the company has supported researchers and academics with its Academia program and enabled them to purchase its systems at favorable conditions. Over 300 of the companys systems are already in use at various universities and research institutions worldwide. These include the Technical University of Munich (Germany), the University of Wolverhampton (England), the California Polytechnic State University (San Luis Obispo, CA), and Incheon PolyTech (Seoul, South Korea).

Depending on requirements, the current EOS Academia program offers suitable ways of quickly entering the world of additive manufacturing. Organizations can enroll for the program, provided they are a recognized educational institution, they use the companys systems at least 50% for their educational courses, and do not exploit the technology for commercial production purposes. The company will draw 10 winners of a Sintratec Kit from all registrations received by October 20, 2017. Apart from receiving valuable information free of charge, registered participants in the program have the exclusive choice of three modules:

The Freshman moduleis designed for institutions looking to learn the basics of 3D printing and integrate them in their own courses. The Sintratec Kit, a kit comprising basic equipment for a powder-based 3D printing system, gives trainers the opportunity to apply and teach the fundamental principles of AM in terms of technology and application.

The Graduate moduleenables institutions to immediately begin working with and teaching 3D printing technology on a practical basis. They receive a Sintratec S1 laser sintering system at attractive conditions as well as a training course that culminates in an EOS Academia Certificate. Users can therefore enter the world of 3D printing in a shorter time and gain initial practical experience in designing and producing additively manufactured components.

Scientistis the module for institutions wanting to exploit the full range of possibilities in industrial 3D printing for research and educational purposes. It consists of selected EOS systems (both metal and polymer) and a multi-day training course at EOS. Within the scope of this program and based on an industrial 3D printing system, universities can make intensive use of the technology for research purposes.

(Prototype Today)EOS GmbH Electro Optical Systems and TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG announce that they have signed a patent license agreement with Concept Laser GmbH of Lichtenfels, Germany. This agreement also ends all existing patent infringement and invalidation lawsuits between the parties as well as patent oppositions.

Under the agreement, Concept Laser receives a non-exclusive license to certain patents from TRUMPF and EOS in Europe and Japan, and thereby has the possibility to market LaserCUSING products world-wide except for the USA. The parties have agreed not to disclose the level of license fees to be paid by Concept Laser.

In early January, der Speigel online referenced EOS and Concept Laser, both in the Southern Germany. der Spiegel commented, Some of these German 3-D printing specialists are growing at a rate that has some industry experts hoping this nascent digital industrial age will finally see the emergence of new innovation drivers made in Germany. German companies are seen as leaders, especially when it comes to 3-D printing of metals.

At this years American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting, EOS, the world-leading manufacturer of laser-sintering systems, has a working direct metal laser-sintering system (DMLS) in operation at their booth (2656) with a variety of plastic and metal medical devices on display. Parts exhibited include customized surgical drill guides reflecting patient-specific geometry, bone rasp samples, and prototype stainless steel surgical tools. The latest test results for customized PEEK implant manufacturing will be available. The show runs February 15-19 at the San Diego (California) Convention Center.

Our offerings at the AAOS meeting demonstrate just how mature laser-sintering is now, says Martin Bullemer, EOS manager for medical business development. Metal and plastics laser-sintering have clearly become enabling technologies for medical products. Bullemer will be available at the booth for interviews.

EOS plastic and metal laser-sintering systems allow medical designers to tailor parts specifically for doctors and patients using 3D data generated by MRI, CT, and/or CAD. Modern data preparation software in combination with laser-sintering can be used to create complex geometries, porous surfaces suitable for better osteointegration or lightweight structures to promote better patient comfort.

Other EOS-related activities at the AAOS meeting include:

* Morris Technologies Inc., exhibiting in Booth 2655 across the aisle from EOS, announced that, in collaboration with Kapstone Medical, they will soon file with the FDA for 510(k) pre-market notification for the first DMLS-generated titanium implant.

EOS, the worlds leading technology supplier in the field of industrial 3D printing of metals and polymers, introduced its EOS P 500 system for additive manufacturing (AM) at formnext 2017. The system addresses companies who want to mass produce polymer parts on an industrial scale in combination with premium part quality.

The new system offers high efficiency for lowest cost-per-part, comes automation ready and can process polymer materials, which require operating temperatures of up to 300C. For the development of a first high performance polymer, EOS recently signed a joint development agreement with Arkema. With the EOS P 500 businesses receive smart and robust technology to foster a reliable, flexible and cost-effective production.

Doubled build rate and maximized machine uptime for increased productivity

The EOS P 500 builds twice as quickly as the current fastest laser sintering machine (EOS P 396) thanks to a dual-laser system fusing the powder, and a new recoater. The latter applies a new layer of powder to the building platform with high speed (600mm/s) and maximum adjustability. Also, the material flow has been optimized. In contrast to previous systems, the EOS P 500 preheats polymer material in advance, before it is applied on the build platform, reducing layer times. The system can also reuse all recycled powder for the next build job at higher fill rates, further increasing the efficiency of the system.

The steps before and after the actual build process are streamlined substantially: Pre-heating of the exchangeable frame and cool-down of the used exchangeable frame (containing the manufactured part) take place outside of the EOS P 500. Additionally, switching between the exchangeable frames is extremely short within 15 minutes after a build job is completed, a new manufacturing process can be started. In combination with rarely needed cleaning (typically 1x per week) and maintenance (typically 1x per year), the total cycle times of the EOS P 500 are improved significantly by up to 75 percent compared to the EOS P 396 giving businesses a system with maximized machine uptime.

The high productivity comes with the known EOS premium part quality. The EOSAME feature homogenizes the energy input of the laser, thus ensuring high quality and reproducible part properties and dimensional accuracy across the complete build volume key for serial production.

Ready for digital production thanks to monitoring and integration

The EOS P 500 comes alongside several solutions for monitoring and integration. The system offers industrial quality assurance through sensory, as well as camera based (optical and thermal), data evaluation, for example stating residual oxygen levels or the temperature of the build chamber. In conjunction with EOSCONNECT software, machine and production data can be gathered and made available in real-time. EOS also offers an intuitive app to visualize the data on a dashboard. This is the next step towards comprehensive and user-friendly machine park surveillance.

Software integration also plays an important role for preparing the AM build job. The EOS P 500 is the first EOS system for additive manufacturing with polymers that is supported by the intuitive, open and productive CAM tool EOSPRINT 2a software that already successfully supports a large number of EOS metal systems. The software enables engineers to assign and to optimize build parameters for their CAD data.

This industrial grade connectivity before, during and after the AM build process is key to embed the EOS P 500 into an automated manufacturing environment and the first step towards automatized polymer production chains.

Users can process materials up to 300C with the EOS P 500 making it possible to manufacture polymer material classes such as PA6, PBT, PET, PPS, PEKK and others. A three stage filter-unit consisting of a cooling trap, fines filter and reactive coal filter counters material outgassing and particle contamination, contributing to a high quality of the AM build process. Being able to manufacture high performance polymer materials opens up new application areas where businesses can benefit from industrial 3D printing for example in the mobility and automotive sector or when manufacturing electronic components.

The first high performance polymer available for the EOS P 500 will be PEKK, a material known for its high thermal stability, inherent flame retardancy and high chemical resistance, that makes it a lightweight alternative to metal. The goal is to release a high performance material at a competitive cost-per-part, enabling industrial applications not feasible until now. EOS recently signed a joint development agreement with Arkema, a leading global manufacturer in specialty chemicals and advanced materials, to develop an EOS material based on the KEPSTAN® PEKK product line of Arkema. As the EOS system is an open platform, other companies can develop materials for the EOS P 500 too. Today, EOS also cooperates with Evonik and BASF for developing future polymer materials.

Materialise acquires first EOS P 500

The first company acquiring the new polymer system EOS P 500 is Materialise. The company incorporates more than 27 years of 3D printing experience into a range of software solutions and 3D printing services, which together form the backbone of the 3D printing industry.

Direct Metal Laser Sintering Machine EOS M 100

EOS introduced its EOS M 100 direct metal laser sintering machine (DMLS®) that is ideal for manufacturers entering into additive manufacturing. This direct metal laser sintering machine is based on a round build platform with a diameter of 100 mm. It focuses on small production quantities.

The EOS M100 additive manufacturing system can process two types of materials, EOS CobaltChrome SP2 and EOS StainlessSteel 316L. EOS Titanium Ti64 will be available in the future.

EOS Launches New Laser-Sintering Machine and Powders at EuroMold

Laser-sintering system manufacturer, EOS, launched a new machine for processing metal powders at EuroMold 2010. Called EOSINT M 280, it is an improved version of its market leading additive manufacturing systems for metal components. Peter Klink, Executive Vice President Global Sales, said, The machine sets new standards in terms of part quality and reproducibility, while at the same time improving cost-effectiveness and user-friendliness.

The company pioneered direct additive manufacturing of metals in 1995 with the introduction of the EOSINT M 250 and to date has sold about 270 metal systems, many for series production in a variety of fields including medical products and tooling.

EOSINT M 280 has all of the features and advantages of the established EOSINT M 270, the worlds best-selling metal additive manufacturing system by far, but includes significant technological developments.

400 Watt laser for increased build speed and productivity

The EOSINT M 280 is available with either the same 200 Watt fibre laser as fitted to the EOSINT M 270, or with a 400 Watt fibre laser option. This higher power laser can melt more metal powder per second, achieving shorter build times and higher system productivity. For example, displayed at EuroMold was an injection mould core that was built in less than half the time.

Especially for heavy use in a manufacturing environment, this enables significantly reduced cost-per-part, raising the competitiveness of laser-sintering compared to other technologies and opening up additional application areas.

Increased build height expands applications range

Another improvement of the EOSINT M 280 is an increase in the maximum build height to 325 mm, compared with 215 mm for the M 270. Taller parts may therefore be produced in the process chamber, expanding the range of applications. This is particularly interesting for hybrid part building, a concept which EOS introduced in the 1990s for prototype tooling. In the hybrid process, complex parts are produced by building additional material on top of a prefabricated part.

Optimised gas management: robust process for increased reproducibility

Based on extensive process investigations and supported by fluid dynamics simulations, EOS has optimised the gas management system of the EOSINT M 280. A high velocity, laminar flow of protective gas across the entire build area, combined with a high capacity recirculating filter system, ensures even more uniform process conditions. As a result, stable melting behaviour is ensured, even over long periods and with higher laser power.

This results in further improved reproducibility of part properties. The system therefore offers an excellent platform for further material and process developments. It also supports processes in a nitrogen gas atmosphere, created by compressed air via an integrated nitrogen generator, as well as in argon gas. Moreover, further improvements in the gas management system enable a reduction in gas consumption and prolonged filter lifetime, which further improve the cost-effectiveness and user-friendliness of the system.

Part Property Management based on thorough process development

The new EOSINT M 280 builds on the Part Property Management concept, introduced at EuroMold 2009. It enables standardisation and comparability of building processes, based on so-called Part Property Profiles (PPP). By ensuring consistent quality throughout the process chain, EOS enables machine users to reliably produce parts based on defined material and part properties.

The EOSINT M 280 supports all the materials used in its predecessor, with equivalent or optimised parameter sets. Currently, EOS offers ten series of materials, including the most recent EOS NickelAlloy IN625. For the 400 Watt option, faster parameter sets with corresponding PPPs will be introduced. Customers can either use the pre-qualified EOS parameter sets or develop and modify their own.

As with previous models, the system configuration can be adapted to different customer needs through a variety of options and accessories. Laser power is monitored during the building process by a facility called LPM, which reports compliance with the specifications or warns of any deviations.

With the base module of the EOSTATE 1.2 software, machine status can be monitored. Additional EOSTATE modules, Quality Assurance, Controlling and MPM (Machine Park Management) are also available. They allow a statistical overview of the built jobs and parts over freely selectable periods of time.

Integrated Process Chain Management (IPCM) modules offer optimised powder and part handling, thus ensuring increased productivity, quality and usability. These can be added at any time. In addition, EOS plans to introduce an optional glove box to enable the parts to be freed from powder inside a closed process chamber environment.

New metal and plastic powders herald additional application areas

EOS introduced new plastic and metal materials at the show. The metal material was EOS NickelAlloy IN625, while for plastic parts, PrimePart FR (PA 2241 FR) and PrimePart ST (PEBA 2301) were launched.

Peter Klink, continued, Very often, the development of new materials is based on close dialogue with our customers. Such developments help to meet their manufacturing challenges while reducing production costs. In addition, the latest materials open up completely new fields of application.

The new EOS NickelAlloy IN625 is a versatile material with high tensile strength, excellent processability and uniform corrosion resistance, making it ideally suited to use in aerospace, chemical, motorsport and marine applications.

First applications have shown promising results. Greg Morris, CEO of rapid prototyping and manufacturing specialist, Morris Technologies in the USA, noted, We are using IN625 with DMLS to build complex aerospace parts for high temperature and high strength applications.

The process achieves material properties that are comparable to wrought metals and far exceed casting. For prototyping projects, DMLS saves our customers weeks and often thousands of dollars compared with traditional methodologies.

PrimePart FR (PA 2241 FR) flame retardant material

PrimePart FR (PA 2241 FR) is a new, flame retardant material that is particularly suitable for applications in the aerospace industry. Based on PA 12 polyamide, the material has an 11 percent elongation at break, which is significantly higher than its predecessor material PA 2210FR. Due to its better refresh rate, PrimePart FR offers better economy and ecological benefits.

PrimePart ST is a flexible elastomeric material offering a wide range of mechanical properties, depending on the laser exposure strategy selected. Via the process control, the material can be converted into a hard- or a soft-type component. It has an excellent refresh rate, making it a valid ecological alternative compared to conventional flexible materials for laser-sintering. Due to its resilience, PrimePart ST opens up new fields of application, such as flexible fasteners, seals or buffers.

EOSINT M 290

The EOSINT M 290 is the newest addition at GPI and our fifthDMLMmachine from EOS. The EOSINT M 290 is an updated and improved version of the EOSINT M 280, an additive layer manufacturing system for metal components. It builds high quality metal parts from 3D CAD data, layer by layer, by melting fine metal powder with a laser. The layered approach enables the creation of extremely complex geometries that wouldnt be possible with CNC machining, including deep groves and three-dimensional cooling channels.

The system is equipped with a 400 watt laser which provides exceptionally high quality parts during the building process. The system operates in both protective nitrogen and argon atmospheres, allowing a wide range of materials to be used including: light metals, stainless steel, tooling steel and super alloys. The EOSINT M 290 offers a number of powdered metal materials with corresponding parameter sets and standardized property profiles. In addition, all materials are subjected to an intensive process development procedure and constant quality assurance.

The M290 has a build volume of 9.85 x 9.85 x 12.8 or 250 x 250 x 325 mm including the build platform, allowing taller parts to be built compared to the EOSINT M270.GPI Prototype offers a range of materials to cover a broad range of applications. EOS Optical Technologies addresses all aspects of optical technologies like development and manufacturing of optical systems and components, opto-fluidics, optomechanical engineering and light engineering.

Advancements in technology and innovative manufacturing processes are crucial for optical sector growth in todays global markets. Markets with high developmental momentum include the energy and semiconductor, life sciences, health care and the agri-food industries. Optical technologies play a crucial role in these markets, the importance of sophisticated but economically priced optical components being vital to new products and applications.

EOS Conferences are held under the umbrella of theWorld of Photonics Congress 2017, the leading international congress foroptical technologies in Europe (26-29 June 2017).

All accepted contributions are to be published on the EOS Optical Technologies digest USB (ISBN numbered) which will be available on-site. The Authors retain the copyright of their abstracts.

At least one author is requested to register for the meeting.

Presenters at EOS Optical Technologies are kindly invited to consider the submission of a manuscript of their research to the EOS open-access on-line journal JEOS: RP (Journal of the European Optical Society, Rapid ).

JEOS:RP publishes articles about recent scientific research and technological innovation as well as review papers about a topic in science or innovation from the recent past. A contribution should be original and will be subjected to the journals standard anonymous peer review process for scientific quality. The average time-to-publication of the journal is of the order of 75 days.

Pre-registration now open (Early Bird until June 1, 2017).

At least one author of an accepted contribution is required to register in advance to the conference.

Concept Laser, EOS, and Trumpf extend their patent license agreements

Lichtenfels/Krailling/Ditzingen Concept Laser GmbH, EOS GmbH (Electro Optical Systems), and Trumpf Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG have updated and extended their patent license agreement from 2006. The new agreement gives Concept Laser GmbH all license rights to sell LaserCUSING products worldwide, also retrospectively if necessary. The parties have agreed to keep details of the license agreement confidential.

In addition, Concept Laser and EOS have agreed to a cross-license that gives each party license rights to the current patent portfolio of the other party. The licenses also cover all products that customers of the parties manufacture or have manufactured on laser sintering or LaserCUSING systems. Under the cross-license agreement, Concept Laser and EOS also agreed to withdraw all patent opposition cases that were pending between them.

Concept Laser GmbHwas founded in 2000 and is an independent company under the umbrella of Hofmann Innovation Group GmbH from Lichtenfels/Bavaria. Concept Laser GmbH develops and sells high-end laser fusing machines for processing metallic powder materials. As a generative manufacturing technique orlaser additive manufacturing(AM), the LaserCUSING process is able to build up material only where it is needed for the component to function properly. Complex geometries such as lightweight structures or integrated functions can thus be produced easily. The LaserCUSING systems (see the M2 LaserCUSING machine above) are employed in the medical/dental, aerospace, automotive, and tool-making sectors and in the jewelry industry.

Why you wont see a laser sintering 3D printer on your desk anytime soon

The industry leader in emerging technology research

MeetU.S. patent 5,121,329, which covers fused deposition modelingthe most popular form of 3D printing. Its filing in 1989 coincided with the founding of Stratasys, which today is one of the most powerful 3D printer companies in the world. But the patents biggest impact came in 2009, when its expiration opened the floodgates for a wave of increasingly cheap desktop 3D printers that are now available to consumers.

A similar wave ofstereolithographic printershas popped up this year as more and more patents for the technology, which uses a laser to cure liquid resin layer by layer, expire. Patents have also begun to expire for selective laser sintering 3D printing, which uses a laser to seal powder together into a 3D object.

Quartzs Christopher Mimssuggested last yearthat key patent expirations in the first half of 2014 would bring a huge surge of interest in SLS printing. After all, it is commonly used to 3D print in metal, which is currently impossible on an FDM or SLA printer (though there are someprimitive workarounds, and we may be on the verge ofSLA metal printing). A desktop SLS printer would allow consumers to move beyond plastic trinkets and into metal jewelry, tools and even, gasp, guns.

But that explosion of SLS printers has not come. FDM still dominates the desktop printer space. What gives?

The answer is that SLS printers are inherently dangerous, messy and just plain difficult to engineer. While the laser in an SLA printer is comparable to one in a Blu-ray player, an SLS laser is powerful enough to be dangerous to any human who comes in contact with it. And the design of an SLS printer generally involves pistons, rollers and gas chambers, making it much more complicated than the basic FDM printers hobbyists have been building for a decade now.

As MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis said to me in October: Theres things that happen when metal melts. Aluminum you [melt] around 700 degrees. Does your oven go up to 700 degrees? You probably dont want that in your house.

Afinia vice president John Westrum echoed Pettis, noting that not only is the laser very powerful, but it is also not nearly as easy to procure as the laser that goes into SLA machines (which is generally exactly the same as those found in overhead projectors).

But that has not stopped hobbyists from talBot,SLS Wax PrinterandOpenSLSare all open-source projects available to anyone interested in creating their own SLS printer. Andreas Bastian, creator of OpenSLS, is now working onanother projectthat involves converting laser cutters into SLS printers. Laser cutters are relatively common and inexpensive and use a laser that is similar in power to SLS printers.

While his project could make SLS printers more accessible for offices as well as grittier, more experienced spaces like hackerspaces, he doubts that a consumer-friendly SLS printer is around the corner.

As more minds start working on the problem, I think there will be significant breakthroughs on the materials side, Bastian said. I dont personally think theyll show up in homes or garages anytime soon. SLS is a much much harder and more expensive process than either SLA or FDM. There are some really serious material handling challenges and safety concerns.

What will undoubtedly happen is that the price of professional SLS machine options will drop dramatically.

The only reason its a million dollar machine right now is it has been such a locked-down space, Bastian said. If we look at the last 7 years in FDM, I would almost argue that the capability of the machines has not changed. I think the main differences has been in cost. There has finally been some competition to optimize these machines for some degree for other markets, but also for material consumption.

DLP holds more in the immediate future. You are right, SLS pricing can go down, but it will certainly be in the small business market at best. Custom parts for the automotive industry may be a factor in bringing prices down if the technology catches on.

Production parts are not driving the 3D printing industry at the moment its prototyping AND customization. Machining and molding already have high capital thresholds and need volume for absorption. The power of 3D printing is you spend the capital but its versatile enough to make multiple geometry parts. The focus, so far, has not been on economically efficient manufacturing in large scales.

FDM machines from Stratasys were $30K in 2008 and they didnt perform any better than a $1200 MakerBot today after the patent ran out. Considering the technology leap isnt necessarily comparable if a $1M machine can come down to $300K-$400K i think youll have some serious market movement.

Sandblasting

High degree of control: the removal of the degradation layer affects only a few microns thickness per pulse.

Selectivity: materials absorb the optic radiation of solid-state lasers (Nd:YAG) according to their color, which makes the action of the laser even more selective

High precision: the cleaning process affects only the area illuminated by the laser beam, which may be defined depending on the actual needs. There is no effect on adjacent materials.
