Finding Your Cameras Current Shutter Actuations

Note: this post is an update to a recentarticle on shutter count for camerasand provides practical information on how to find out your cameras shutter life expectancy and the various ways to find out the cameras current shutter count. It was written by one of our readers Jeremy T

First of all, check the shutter life expectancy of your camera. It can sometimes be difficult to find this out; camera makers may not even release the details at times. However, this is changing; there are a few resources online with the features the shutter life expectancy for numerous models from all the different brands; if yours is not listed there, then a quick Google search should provide you with an answer.

Now that youre aware of how long your shutter should or will last, you need to find out the current shutter actuations or shutter count of your camera. Its basically how many photos youve taken.

There are several free (freeware) sources on the internet which can be used for this.

Its necessary to note that Canon doesnt store the shutter actuation details in the EXIF data. So for Canon, things are a little different; the best program to check your shutter count is EOS Info.

EOS Infois a neat little program by AstroJargon. Its freeware, although they do ask for donations if you can spare it. It will provide the shutter count, the serial number, the camera model, the firmware version as well as the owner and date the results as well. EOSInfo works with almost any DSLR, excepting the 500D (may/may not work; their website says not, but its worth giving it a shot anyway). How does it work? Simply connect the camera to your computer using a cable, run the program and voila! Your details are there for your examinations. Prepare to be surprised, though, as sometimes its more than you think! Its not available for Macs, though, only for PCs; however, EOSInfo is the updated version of the40D Shutter Counta previous edition, which despite the name works on almost any DIGIC III/IV DSLRs, excepting the 1D series. It runs on Macs, using a cable as like EOS Info.

Nikon and Pentax store the shutter count details in the EXIF data. For Nikon and Pentax, you can either useMy Shutter Count simply upload a JPG or RAW and get your results or downloadOpanda IExif. Note: IExif should work with Pentax; this has not been tested/. However, if it doesnt, you can still use My Shutter Count to get your shutter count.

Olympus doesnt store the shutter acutation details in the EXIF, but conveniently, theres a nice trick one can use for Olympus bodies. Simply follow these instructions:

Press PLAY +OK at the same time

Press on the dial, in order: up, down, left and then right

Depress the shutter release button fully

Unfortunately, for Sony users, it might not be possible to find your shutter count. You can try using Opanda IExif, My Shutter Count or even EOS Info/40D Shutter Count however, theres not guarantee they will work. Its worth a try, but at the moment, it doesnt seem possible to find the shutter actuations for Sony cameras.

If youve found other ways to do this for the brands above or other brands of cameras wed love to hear them in comments below so that this can become a resource for others.

I cant get EOSinfo to work with my Canon 7D. It works fine with my 40D, but with 7D I get the following error message, and then the application opens saying there is no camera connected.

Unhanded exception has occurred in your application

Do you I have a problem witht the 7D I just bought, or does EOSinfo just not yet work with the 7D?

XNview will show Nikon shutter count in EXIF info. With my Pentax 1stDL it shows characters like you get with the Alt Num Lock keys in the shutter count area. I think they translate to a count but am unsure how. I am going to try both the fixes you outlined above. Thanks.

My shutter count worked. It says 835 actuations. I bought the camera 2nd hand so that seems low-but Ill take it.

I have tried shutter actuations but it didnt works for my canon. is there any software from canon to read them all???

I guess it is important to check the shutter often especially for the pro.

On my 500d if you dont reset the counter which i dont know why you would it will keep count of the amount you have taken. Im pretty sure after it gets to 100-9999 it goes to 101-0000

It wont work with my EOS Kiss X4 (550D)

It says No Camera Connected

Hi, the image number, which is the same as shutter actuations, is in the file information in Photoshop.

Click , Scroll the menus along to and look under Schema (

Hi again. I used XHTML tags in my message which got lost in translation.

Try FILE .FILE INFO..ADVANCED.then Schema (

Unfortunately, the Preview software on Mac did not provide me with the real image number Im using a 400d and I have made thousands of pictures and the Preview only sees 192

Doesnt work on my 7D either. I just get the Unhanded exception has occurred in your application message. I click ok and I get no camera connected message.

It does work on my 5D mk. ii . Hopefully theyll fix the 7D compatibility problem.

The 5D has 5,871 shutter releases and I bought it 5 months ago. Sheesh ! The 7D must have a million by now !

This program is perfect!!! My 5D MKII have only shutter counts 115.

Preview shows image number 0. on my Canon 50D it will not give me a correct shutter count on my MacBook pro (8 months old). Am up to date with software update. Could be biased on Canon or the 50D.

Easy option for NIKON in MAC Preview: Open your last shot in PREVIEW View Show Inspector click on Nikon Tab within the inspector Shutter Count is in the list.

Do try XnView, specially for Nikon. Its downloadable online for free.

I shot almost 1000 pictures per use of a camera. So if I use it 100 times. Sorry for me, shutter should be replaced.

KUSO Exif viewer told me the shutter count for my Nikon D300s from my last photo (7776). The olegkikin website showed one user had more than a million shutter count and still going. So I am not worried. If I shoot 10000 photos a year I am still good to go for ten years, and I am sure I will buy a new camera after that.

Im amazed that some people worry their camera is going to break if it has a five-figure shutter count. I used an Olympus OM-2 for decades and have no idea how many total shots it took, but probably 50,000+. It worked / I was happy. Maybe the digital manufacturers should stop giving this information, then the stress-levels of some users would benefit !

As Zafar mentions, in a few years, because of all the hype and upgrades that go-on in the digital camera marketing world, well all want a new one long before it has a chance to breakdown.

Shutter count for Canon using Linux. Likely works with many others. Hit up for specs.

If you are running Linux for an Operating System, install gPhoto (even if you dont use Gnome). Remove the SD card (to avoid any pesky Camera in use errors). Plug the camera in, go out to a bash prompt and type:

gphoto2 get-config /main/status/shuttercounter

Here is my results First shot was the T1i, second was the XS:

:~ gphoto2 get-config /main/status/shuttercounter

To Ray Lotier. What computer youve used and what was the all process to see the shutter actuations on the Canon Mark 2. Thank you Joe B

is there a way to find out by using the menu on the camera? i was gonna buy a used canon s100 from someone on craigslist, but i cant tell until after the purchase by going into the exif info on the computer. once money exchanges hands for the purchase, the buyer isnt going to take back the camera if i find out he had lied about how much he has used the camera.

The Nikon version works fine. It does what it says on the box!!

The program doesnt recognise my Canon 60D.

I tried uninstalling the program and downloaded it again and reinstalled it and it still wont work

Kuso EXIF Reader shows fill EXIF data, including Image Number (total images taken), and is free at

I have a Sony A200 and was told the shutter count was displayed on each photo as part of the information. My camera currently shows 103-1546. The last four digits resets at 9999, and the first three goes up one, but I dont really know how this works. I think my count may be something like 103,1546.

There seems to be confusion over image number and shutter count or shutter actuations. The image number is a resettable number, depending on your camera model. And may also show different values for .jpg and RAW images. The shutter count, certainly for Nikon DSLR from my own experience, is not resettable, even if the camera is taken-in for service. Im looking at the example from Winston and suspect the first three digits are a folder number, and the last four digits are the image number which increments on each frame. Probably somewhere in the menu system these can be deleted or reset to zero.

See my earlier reply and try Kuso EXIF Reader. It shows all EXIF data including shutter count.

Didnt work with my Canon 60D, ive tried everything that I found in the internet, bot on windows and on mac. Theres one web-site that gave me the number, but its twice as big as my recent image number, and i know, that this number never reached 9999.

I found an online tool for Sony shutter counts at

I uploaded the last picture I took with my alpha 55, model that was correctly identified by this tool, and I get two different informations: exposures (2557) and shutter actuations (5115) Could you explain the difference? Which one is the real number for the amount of photos taken, and why one of these figures is 2x the other?

Both dont work with modern SLR (after the 550D)

For Mac users, there is no need to download an app or upload a private photo to a site for shutter count. Open any of your photos (I tested jpg and NEF) in OSXs bundled Preview app. Tools/Open Inspector and youll see an EFIX data tab. Scroll down to see Image Count. Thats it. I also noted that I have a separate Nikon tab that shows Shutter Count. Same thing.

Thanks for this! Tried a couple of the upload sites and had no success. This works great!

Used EOS Info as mentioned above for a Canon 5D mk2 and it worked easily and perfectly! Recommended.

It shows lots of Exif data but not image count. What version are you using?

OSX 10.9.1. I just checked again with more photos. Turns out my Nikons (D40, D200, D600) shooting in JPG or NEF report image count. See below. However, my Panasonic compacts and iPhones do not. Ive also noted that photos from other cameras seem to vary. Must be a function of whether a camera will report it or not. Havent really checked but perhaps dSLRs capture image count whilst mirrorless do not.

i opened a RAW file from my 600D but preview doesnt show an image count in the EXIF data. i tried with a JPEG of the same image, and it wont give any data.

Hmmm, on review, I too was unable to find the EXIF shutter count on many of my photos on my desktop. However, when I Previewed the original files on my external drives, Preview 7.2 showed a Nikon tab that gives the shutter count. OSX 10.9.2. I wonder if my Aperture exports stripped the info whereas the originals maintained it. This photo was a D600 NEF taken last year. Wishing you luck.

Hey Norm thanks for the info, I am looking exactly where you told me and I dont see Image count in the list. Can you help ? Do I need a newer OS version to make it work, I have an older mac 10.7.5

Yes, Norm. But if you are Canon user, its still very hard to get that information.

I found a very useful way to get the shutter count information for Canon if you are using MacOS. Please have a check here

If you are Canon fan. Here is your solution

Magic lantern does this as well by hitting the trashcan button.. Debug mode and scroll down.. Tada.

For those who have or want to sell or buy Canon xxoD/ Rebel series etccamera, Canon makes it really difficult to establish their shutter count.

I have spent hours trying to figure out how to do it and thought it would be kind to pass on what I have learnt!

I downloaded today the EOS Inspector App on my Mac. Be aware it doesnt work on all models, so check first. For example the App support page lists the models it works on (for example not 400D or earlier, and not some recent models such as 80D).

Cost is $2.99 which gave me the peace of mind to know I was around half way through the lifespan of my 550Ds average expected 100,000 shots.

As a cross check I also installed Magic Lantern software on the camera and it gave the exact same number, though separately noted an additional 1545 LiveView actuations.

The EOSInfo doesnt appear to work for the 7D MKII. I have tried all ways, starting the software first, switching the camera on first, neither seem to work, you just get the message No camera detected

doesnt work for Canon 5D photos

No, this is not option for me.. bcoz i have operating system windows – xp, 32 bit. To create the 3d model from any overlapped digital photographs i must have to do camera calibration first.. and so far camera calibration needed exif file of camera which contain focal length and all camera parameters…. so please suggest me another option to get exif file in my casestudy…..

how i can get exif fille of any photograph which has been taken by my digital camera…??? can u help me..???

How do you find it on the Samsung NX10 ?

For Nikon cameras, if you have Photoshop CS4 (I believe it works for earlier versions also) simply open an unedited JPG or NEF image and then got to File/File Info, and select the Advanced tab. Expand (click on the little arrow at the start of the line) the line finishing in exif/1.0/aux. In the expanded display, the shutter count is shown as aux: ImageNumber.

Canon T2i – error retrieving shutter count. I get this on my mac mini running os 10.5.8 with a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo. I unplug the usb cord and it gives me this error immediately. I then turn plug the cable in, turn the camera off and on, click Get Shutter Count, wait a second or two and then I get the same error message, error retrieving shutter count. Apples Preview V 4.2 has a lot of exif data, but doesnt reveal the shutter count for the T2i, but will for NEF (Nikon raw files). also fails so I assume that the shutter count is not in the EXIF data. Anyone have a work around?[eimg url= title=40DShutterCount.png]

Thanks for this, i was just looking for a way to figure that out. Kinda goofy you cant see it in camera on a nikon.

To see that camera data from looking at the Exif data with Apples Preview Inspector, it might only work with the latest version of the Preview app. I was using Preview version 5.0.2

If you have an older version, you might try upgrading it or try one of the other methods suggested in other comments, or shown in other blogs or other how-to websites. If I could edit my post and get rid of the second duplicate post above, I would!

After installing the firmware hack and bootable CF on my Canon Rebel XTi, I was able to get a reading of the shutter count. Getting this hack working was a little more involved than I thought but really wasnt too difficult, and provides some cool new functions (spot metering, high ISO modes, and shutter actuations!). Pulling the count is a little bit of a workaround, but atleast I can now get it, plus access a scary looking service menu Im afraid to touch.

Im not sure I entirely trust the count though, since it only shows a little over 8k actuations – Ive probably put most of those on myself, but was told when I bought it that it was used for over a year, and it looked like it too.

(Second post of this, I could not see the first attempt)

Yes, the Apple Preview application that comes with every Mac is a very useful program with some nice features that many Apple users dont use often enough. Like Will said before, you can see your image count with this free Apple program. Just open any of your JPGs with Preview and then go to Tools in the menu, and Show Inspector. (Or use the keyboard shortcut that is also shown there). A little pop up window comes up and you can then see all kinds of info on your photo. Click on the i icon, then the Exif tab and you can quickly see information from shutter exposure, to what lens model and lens serial number, and when you scroll down you can see the image number. The last shot you made of course would show the latest image number. At this Inspector Tool window, you can also then click on the Nikon tab and that same Image Number is then called the ShutterCount.

What I dont seem to find there, however is what Camera model or camera SN was used. Does anyone know where to find that using Preview or some other application that we probably have at hand?

I used Opanda IExif 2.26 on the files from my Nikon D200 and something is definitely screwy. I noticed this right off because I use a sequential numbering scheme on my files, changing the leading 4 chars after every 10,000 shots so that the file number is essentially a shutter count. The file number tracked the shutter count as reported by Opanda fairly closely for awhile, but right around 24000 shots, the error went from +200 to -200, and soon thereafter the shutter count jumped by about 27000! So right now my filename is at 36000 but the shutter count in the Exif is 63562. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I just tried the Opanda software to get my NIkon D70 count and it gives the same as My Shutter Count, which is way below what I have taken. ?

I uploaded a photo from my second hand Nikon D70 to My Shutter Count and it gave a number of clicks way below what I have taken since I got the camera. I presume the previous owner (a wedding photographer) had heaps more shots from this camera. Maybe it is the reset thing after 10,000 that someone mentioned above?

Awesome, thanks! According to the EXIF file, my newest camera has done 5707 actuations, and it has a life expectancy of 100,000 so should have it for another 15 years before I have any problems. And if Henri Cartier-Bresson was right, and my first 10,000 photographs are my worst, then Im about half way there!

Tried this. Works on the Canon 50D just fine. Shutter count was right around where I thought it would be.

Tried it on the Canon 7D and it said that software loaded successfully, but the when I ran it, kept getting the error message. Switched back to the 50 D, and yup it worked.

For some reason it does not rwcognize the 7D

Tried it on my Canon EOS 50D, and it worked great.

I havent tried it, but since Fujis DSLRs are basically Nikon D200s (and similar models) with a different look (excepting the things like a higher dynamic range, etc…), I would think its the same.

Unfortunately no one seems to give any instructions on the Fuiji FinePix cameras. I have the S9500 DSLR, and cannot find any tips or tricks for this one.

well thank you Darren for the tip. ill give it a shot =)

if any of you are on flickr, when you upload it retrieves all the exfi data to. This tells you the shutter count

Olympus E-520 also needs MENU+OK. Sharons link is very helpful (thanks!).

On my Olympus E3 none of the tricks works. can anybody tell me how it works on my camera?

ive tried Photome for Pentax and Nikon. It works.

My Pana FZ20is 6 years old, very battered and looks bad but is still working, 49800picks, read on exif, my olympuses are alder but, not being a pro, I never took 50000pics with the same body….

Another option for many cameras is using sites like flickr….upload file and view the EXIF data…you should see the shutter count under image number

If you have a flickr account, upload an UNEDITED shot, go to the exif data, its down there, think its called shutter count. I would check, but my stupid work network wont let me.

On Mac, I use EXIF Viewer which is a free download:

It shows comprehensive exif information including shutter actuations (on Nikon JPEG at least).

I didnt realise Preview worked too – Thank you Will!

I used Opanda to check a JPG I had made from my Nikons RAW (NEF) files … the shutter-count apparently survives the process in the EXIF data, but some save for web routines may strip info like this out…

Too bad Opanda cant open raw files, I dont want to upload it to for its relatively big files.

Thanks for the link to the Opanda software – Ive been looking for something like this, and when I open the last shot I took with my Nikon D80, I can see the total shutter-release count up to that point. (Im creeping up on 23K).

tonys, it doesnt explicitly state that EOSInfo works only with digic III/IV processors, but it does say EOSInfo works with almost any DSLR, excepting the 500D

It also says that the old version, 40D shutter count, which is also available for mac, works on almost any DIGIC III/IV DSLRs, excepting the 1D series

So I thought the current version of EOSInfo had been updated to also include shutter counts for older models, which is why I installed and tried it, but alas you are right it wont work for my XTi.

Ive never been able to get that link to work for my Pentax K10D. And I dont strip the exif. Not to mention it takes a LONG time to upload a 10mb RAW file even on DSL.

Assuming youve never reset your file namin.

Simple tool for grabbing some Secret info from Canon EOS Cameras.

i download the file but i didnt connect my 5D3 to the PC

Is this a newer version of Astrojargon EOSInfo ?

the Astrojargon is an old software for 40DShutterCount

Heres a table with relations between cameras and programms with which the shutter count can be read. Feel free to message me for complements and corrections:

Be aware of wrong information in this ADVERTIZMENT undercover thread.

I have been charged for what that was supposed to be free and hope at least the one who is pocketing the money here, is at least paying advertisement fee to POTN…

That doesnt really answer my question. Are you affiliated with or M ?

When you download the Zip file it shows a folder named EOSInfo which similar to Astrojargon EOSInfo. I always get nervous when downloading an executable zip file to my computer. It would be nice to have more information before I run the program.

You should be nervous andvery cautiousbefore running Canon EOS Camera Info v1.2s executable file. A simple internet search on the authors email (M) reveals that he is also the author ofMagic Password Stealer(Magic_Ps):

MPS v1.5 creates a software that hacks the yahoo password. After you create the software, you have to send it to the victims computer at any condition. After victim opens the file, MPS starts its work. Then when the victim re-login in his yahoo, The password and other information is sent to your email as offline message.

Shabgard.org is also an Iranian hackers community.

If I were Keesbeest I would not be advertising a program from such a dangerous source.

Anyone should be extremely careful about running unsigned executable files on their computer. If the author did not want to be traceable down to their creation through a digital signature, why would you want to run an unknown program with scarce reputation?

Thanks for the detective work sergeyv and thanks for watching our backs!

I have been charged for what that was supposed to be free and hope at least the one who is pocketing the money here, is at least paying advertisement fee to POTN…

This thread has a lot of posts that contain links to at least 5 or 6 different shutter count programs. Some good, some not so good.

The original one that this thread was first started about (EOSCount) was originally free but the author (sergey) stated in this thread some time back that he would be charging a minimal charge for its use.

So, which ADVERTIZMENT are you warning us about?

A reminder that EOSCount, as well as any Mac App Store program, is digitally signed to verify author identity and assure safe usage.

The same one that started under title of Free but Charged my paypal account and NEVER told me that it is only dedicated to one camera and not working on any other cameras I have. BTW charge was not negligible as you try to say!

I totally feel being ripped off by the program, if it is Sergeyv, then be it.

After only paying and learning how useless that program was, I never used it and if Sergeyv has any decency or conscious, will pay back my paypal chargers.

People like the initial programmer here, should pay their fair share of advertisement charges to the PONT site as they got their crappy product sold only due to this ADVERTIZMENT appearing as a thread here that I feel totally victim of it.

I did use a program based on a good review on Youtube and download was from a Farsi/Arabic script web site. I am not sure if it was the same you described here but could be that.

That program worked flawlessly for all Canon cameras I have and totally free.

I have lost the file unfortunately. But I am very cautious about my security and my firewire never report any unusual activity following the install of that program. I never had any of symptoms mentioned in one of your links.

BTW you link to Iranina hacker is not opening.

1st of all this thread was not started by sergeyv it was started by msowsun.

2nd of all when this thread was started it was free. If you read thru the thread (many pages I agree) youll see where sergeyv decided to start charging.

What does a payment for one reading buy?

A payment is good for one unique shutter count reading. A unique reading is a unique combination of camera and shutter count value.Once a unique reading has been paid, it can be read again and again by connecting the same camera, provided the camera has not had additional shutter actuations since the paid reading. If images were taken and the shutter has been actuated, there is a new unique shutter count value that will require a new fee.

Canon EOS 7D Review

Canons X0D series was, for many years, essentially the default choice for keen enthusiasts, professionals and aspiring-professionals who wanted top-level image quality and functionality without the bulk (or price) of a pro-level camera such as the 1D series. The 10D, 20D and 30D were hugely successful and popular cameras, and you didnt have to spend long shooting with them to understand why. However, like every other sector of the DSLR market, there are some very competitive rivals, in terms of both price and features. Cameras such as Sonys A700 and Nikons D200 and 300 have meant the most recent X0D EOSs have been held to higher standards and have found it a little harder to stand-out.

Which brings us to the 7D, a camera that seems determined to wrestle back the king of APS-C crown. At first glance it looks a lot like the EOS 50D – its unmistakably a member of the EOS family – but a closer look shows that this is far from being the gentle refresh that were used to seeing in this range. And indeed, this is intended as big brother to the 50D, rather than as a replacement for it.

For a start, the camera is built around a new 18MP sensor, but the thing youre likely to notice before you even fire a shot is the impressive new viewfinder. 1.0X magnification and 100% coverage offers a noticeable improvement over the 0.95X, 95% finder in the EOS 50D and puts the camera on the same footing as the D300S (Its 0.94X finder ends up essentially the same size, once the focal length multiplier effect of its fractionally larger sensor is taken into account).

However, the 7D isnt just a 50D with a new sensor, viewfinder and revised body – other headline changes include a new AF system with a dedicated processor, dual Digic 4 processors and a new shutter mechanism to allow 8fps continuous shooting, and the ability to control groups of external flashguns using its built-in flash. However, the updates extend beyond these big-feature changes to include a variety of tweaks, refinements and additions. Make no mistake, Canon wants to be the default choice again.

The 7D fits into the Canon range above the 50D and this is apparent when you place them alongside one another – the 7D not only features additional external controls, it also has a considerable viewfinder bulge to accommodate its huge prism. The new screen does not feature a dark border so offers the same size of display, despite appearing smaller.

8 frames per second continuous shooting

1080p HD video recording with manual controls

3.0 inch Clear View II LCD screen with 920,000 dots

19-point AF system (all cross-type)

1.0x magnification and 100% coverage viewfinder

Does anybody know how slow a card we can use in a 7D and still get the advertised performance? Id like to make 80 JPEGs in 10 seconds.

I use a 7D as my main camera. I would consider myself to be an advanced learner and Ive found this to be an easy camera to use. Study the handbook then go and play with the camera until you are well versed in the use of the controls. All you will be doing is gaining valuable experience. Get one, use it and enjoy it.

I have been looking to purchase this camera for some time now and have just read your review. In the pros and cons you state that its no good for the beginner. What reasons is it not good ? I was combining an entry level spec to amature pro as my budget is limited and wont be able to get anything later.

I am looking at a gently used 7D now since my older 30D doesnt do well with any ISO over 400. The comments about being not sogood for beginners are a bit silly, I think. Get it if you can and go for it! Thats what I am going to do.

Joel, I have a 30D, 40D and 7D. Reviewing some pictures I took a few years ago when I lived in the States ( Boston ), what struck me about a bunch of pics that I took with my trusty 30D at the Zoo there, was just how smooth and natural looking my pics looked taken at ISO 800, and even the ISO 1600 shots looked very decent indeed. Ideally I found that ISO 1250 or below gave me the best results, but 1600 on the 30D was very close to my 7D can output. Probably due to the far less crowded sensor. I think the colours on the 30D are my favourite of all my Canons. I also prefer the metering on the older Canons to the 7D`s fancy new system that tied in the metering to the focusing area and often ends up with eithir too dark, or too bright exposures, though I have learnt how to work around this. I did a test a while back and put my Canon 70-300 MM L lens on the 30D and the resolution and sharpness was amazing for an 8 MP camera.

I think what the reviewer meant that it is quite a complicated camera to learn fully, but of course you can pace yourself with this, and just learn as you go. There are so many options available on this camera, it takes a long time to fully learn them and get the best out of the camera. I would highly recommend the camera and it will last you a lifetime. To get the best out of it, try and get some really good lenses over time, as these you can keep forever. The premium L lenses are worth every penny, and if you ever trade up to a Full frame, you can bring the lenses along, so they are truly a lifetime investment. My best ever purchase was a second hand Canon 70-300 L 4- 5.6 lens. This is incredibly sharp with fantastic colour and contrast, as well as amazing focus abilities and tank like build quality.

Beginners stay as beginners during the few month, and whats after? They must change the equipment? Of course, not. Then if someone will buy Canon 7D, he will use it all period – from beginning to professional use…

Apsofable, the Canon 7D has a live view feature which is almost like using a pocket camera. It also has a green rectangle on the mode dial. Beginners will be fine with this camera.

1600 on the 30D was very close to my 7D can output

Well yea, thats what all the charts say, including DxoMark.

Every years manufacturers creating new and new cameras, better and better cameras, but I think many old cameras will be more then enough for most photographers, especially if we talk about such truly professional camera as Canon 7D. Dont push ISO upper then 800 and stay happy. Fast, full magnesium, well made, enough MP, great VF, absolutely great colors, very large amount of optics from any manufacturer, even great cheapest optics and… today in China, for example, you can buy it for 450 USD in 97 (!!!) condition with less then 5000 shutter actuation. I am not big fun of Canon cameras, but 7D is really great camera!

I am sorry if I am insulting someones intelligence. The abbreviation VF stands for View Finder. I didnt know that when I was a beginner.

7D is really great camera! – kobakokh

Yes, I agree. I think a lot of people agree with this. When it first came out, the Canon 7D was like a poor mans Canon 1d.

Dont push ISO upper then 800 and stay happy. – kobakokh

If Apsofable is a beginner, then maybe Apsofable shouldnt be messing with the ISO in the first place.

Just set AUTO-ISO and leave it there until you are no longer a beginner. I assume you can figure out how to update the BIOS. If not, then the DP forums will still be here.

yes of course. I specially used it last few days, took from my chinese friend, and its great, really. I have Nikon D700, its a better because of FF, but color is better from 7D, for example, and 7D is faster and more comfort for use, and has absolutely great AF system, made like tank, also its easy to use old different lenses with Canon then with Nikon, this is also some good side for many people. I always like top or near top cameras from any manufacturers. Ooh, i also compare image quality from 7d and newer 70D. from old 7D image quality is better! In 7D price on used market you can buy some new P&S camera, why? for what? with 7D every phtographger can work as true professional and develop[ own way fast and interesting. Also there is one great lens for APS-C system – Sigma 17-50/50 OS! With it 7D will be great choice for anyone. With OS there will be no need to push ISO more then 800 in most situations. And both of them possible to buy for 700 USD! Great choice for anyone, i think!

I was busy shooting today, battery full, CF card in the camera and everything went black? It will not switch on at all?

Have checked the battery – put my spare in, also fully charged but still no luck?

I was using studio lights – so does that effect the camera?

If you were using the PC Sync or hotshot to sync the flashes, they may have a trigger voltage beyond what the camera can handle. If that was the case they may have smoked your camera. There are companies that make trigger isolation units to protect the new modern cameras from the older strobes that use high voltage sync. Have your camera looked at by a repair shop or canon to determine if it is worth repairing.

Ive been struggling to find the replacement for my 5 year old Canon 40D. The images from the 40D are excellent, but it is technically behind times.

When the 7D was first released, I bought one, but returned it because of what I perceived as sensor noise. Bad decision on my part! The camera was technically all my 40D is not. So, now that there are scant few left as the shelves clear for the 7D Mk II, I just ordered a brand new 7D (not Mk II) at a bargain basement price. I cant wait to revisit this incredible camera once again.

Hey! Im curious what bargain basement price you paid for your 7D?

I know Im not the OP but I just paid $375 for one. I think anything under $400 is a really good price at the time.

now, in June 2017 Canon 7D in mint condition with less then 2000 shutter evaluation cost 440 USD in China. Nikon D7100 is same condition cost about 485 USD. Both of them are grest cameras, I think. Nicon or CAnon users have here very good options for used cameras.

Does anybody know if a Canon 7D will be compatible with a Canon 17-85mm IS and a Canon 70-300mm which I currently use on my Canon EOS 450D?

Any feedback on what people think of the 7D would be greatly appreciated as I am considering purchasing one.

I bought this camera (body only) about 4 years ago with a 24-105mm f4 L IS USM lens. After using it for about 8 months, I compared it side by side with a co-workers T2i (with various lens). In each case I noticed that the T2i had a sharper (cleaner) image. I was very disappointed. Tried the in-menu focus compensation… didnt work. Finally sent it back to Canon. They fixed it under warranty. It has been good ever since. I shoot mostly my kids at their sporting events… track n field, cross country and tennis. All outdoor sports, so about 2 years ago, I purchased the 70-300mm f4-5.6 L IS USM lens. Both lens work really well with the camera… very sharp results. I would say about 90 ~ 95% of the shots are keepers.

I bought this monster yesterday. 3

I think there was a lot of cutting and pasting in the review. They referred to the 15mp image files and the 18-55 kit lens when they meant the 18-135 kit lens as shown in the product photos and referred to in the intro.

I think that initially looking at the Canon 7D MK IIs specifications they might seem conservative, but as with the EOS 5D Mark III and the 1D X updates to these models were refined, with well measured features that met the needs of photographer in quality and reliability, rather than boasting headline hitting new technological advancements.

I love this camera/disappointed in Canon/customer support/service. The 1st 7d I purchased had a pixel issue. Seems to be notorious in Canon lenses. My 1st PowerShot S2 IS had a pixel issue. I didnt realize was present until camera was out of warranty-had to fight like a dog to get them to replace it. My 7d SAME issue, issue found after first test shots I took in the store downloaded! Didnt want the store to send it back only to send a fixed lens I returned it, bought anothernew 7d, but still a problem. Once again found a mo after warranty when a little bracket inside the lens was detached from inside, only 1 screw was holding it in place, there was supposed to be 2 this bracket keeps the extension within the lens. A quality control issue that went unnoticed during manufacturing according to the camera guy that had to fix it but it didnt matter the damage to the focus computer chip inside had already been damaged & Canon refuses to do a thing about it par for the course.

Ive just switched from Nikon to Canon and am completely lost, I shoot birds in flight a lot and cannot get my head around how to engage burst on the 7D, cant get built in flash to raise its ugly head also how to change menu settings. Wish Canon had stuck to more universal icons and menu.

Despite all that was very impressed with fast focus on few single shots that I took

Little late, but its called the Q button, which is for quick settings. Select the square and change it to multiple stacked squares for burst.

Pop up flash only comes up automatically on the green auto box i believe. I prefer to never use flash, so i forget.

If you have a filter fitted to protect the lens try shooting without. After buying my 100-400 lens I returned to the shop after finding my images soft using a 7D. They tested my lens with a second one they had in the shop and agreed the first lens was faulty. When I got the second lens home I found it as poor as the first until I realized the second lens tested had not had a filter fitted when tested in the shop and I had transfered my filter to the second lens when I got home.

Conclusion: I only use filters for effects and I have remove all my protective filters from my L lenses. Why spend hundreds of pounds on lenses just to add a piece of cheap glass on the front.

I am 7D user and have noticed that my images are considerably soft. I mostly use canon 100-400L lens. Initially I thought that its problem with the way I use camera. I tried all possible things. Searched lot and found many discussion about AF problem with 7D. Can someone share their experience?

It seems 7D AF is not consistent although manual focus gives considerably crisp and sharp image.

Im a wheelchair user and have gone for the 7D because of the increase in range when using a shorter lens over full frame which means though I often cannot get close I often achieve a useable image.

Live on the coast so to avoid problems re dust on the sensor from the beach I purchased a second one a few months back which says, I think, just how pleased I am with the product. Re low iso and noise, possibly because of high light levels from sea reflection and living in a flat open area I personally find no problems but using 2.8 lenses helps. Not professional but have had people use my stuff on their websites – so for my needs the 7D works well – Oh, and if like me you have poor dexterity youll find the raised buttons really helpful even when wearing gloves.

I have a 70D, am getting a used 7D at $ 800 next week, will provide a comprehensive review after that

My Review of the Canon 7d as the owner of one for 1yr is this.I shoot Professionally and have used the 7d for just about 1yr.It is a bit bigger, heavier than my other EOS Canons.Picture quality is top of the line.Video quality is top of the line. The Grain Factor when using the ISO at a higher number is compensated by a setting in the Menu so no problem. At 8fps continuous it stands above the others.Weather proof as well (Body only).Recently my Canon 7d was knocked over while mounted atop a 6ft tripod landing on solid asphalt.A little scratch on the body was all the damage it received.Though bigger and heavier the construction, function, image quality of this Camera is incredible.I shoot Landscape,Portrait, sports(MMA Fights) and everything in between.Canon went above and beyond with this model.A+ is the grade I give for this one.

Which one is a better model 70d or 7d , I have read numerous reviews and seen plenty of videos, even though 70d is a much newer version I would like to know from some one who has used them side by side.

I think both are great, depends on your needs, the 7D is like a tank, the build quality is incredible, its AF is phenomenal (a cut above the 70D in terms of customization options), the 70D has slight advantage 2/3 of a stop at higher isos, has wifi and touchscreen, the 7D has bigger and better OVF, and the 70D have awesome video capabilities. I played with both and went for the 7D (easy choice), the 70D felt like a toy and I didnt like the plasticky feel (compared to the 7D). Bit both are great, youll enjoy either depending on your needs.

It depends on what you want to do. I use it up to ISO 6400 for street photography, and its noisy but it adds to the mood of any photo Id take at such a sensitivity. (Generally, silouettes at night, low key portraits…)

For a more general use, Id say ISO 1600 with a good exposure is useable.

Checked your photos at m. Really it was awesome ๐Ÿ™‚ Finally I decided to go for 7D after saw your website. Tnx !!!

please suggest me some good lenses which are more better for portrait & landscape shooting

For potraits i use 5omm prime canon 1.8mm

Has anyone been able to use a program to find the 60D shutter count?

What program works? EOSInfo works on all my other cameras just not the 60D.

Canon 5D MkII , 7D , 60D , 1000D(XS) , S95

Sigma 50mmf2.8 macro / Tamron 90mmf2.8 macro

I spoke too soon. Although the following fix eliminates the problem of crashing and allows EOSInfo to read other camera details, it can not read the shutter count. Guess that AstroJargon needs to update the utility after all.

Here is what you need to do to get 60D to work with EOInfo. These instructions are for Windows XP (other versions of windows should work the same).

Install the latest version of EOS Utility (download from internet or install from the CD that came with 60D).

Go to C:\Program Files\Canon\EOS Utility or wherever you have installed EOS Utility and copy EDSDK.dll.

Go to C:\Program \EOSInfo or wherever you have installed EOSInfo and paste. This will copy the EDSDK.dll from canon utilities and overwrite the one existing in EOSInfo. You can also do a drag-n-drop between two folders, make sure to hold down Ctrl key while dragging and dropping so that file is copied and not moved (or else canon utilities wont work). If you want to be extra careful then make a backup of exiting EDSDK before copying.

You are now set to use EOSInfo with 60D. Apparently 60D is incompatible with the older version of Canon SDK that EOSInfo uses. Fortunately no change in EOSInfo is needed to use the new version and a drag-n-drop works fine. Someday EOSInfo will be updated and it would work right out of the box with new canon cameras.

Has anyone been able to use a program to find the 60D shutter count?

Thanks for your comments. I might call Canon and see if they might tell me where they put the shutter count information in the data as apposed to the old location. Then see if I can contact the EOSInfo author for a fix. Just a thought?

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to their site and the 60D is not there in the 1300 cameras listed. Maybe they are working on it?

might be too new. when i got the t2i in june it worked with the ubuntu version, so i cant imagine it was in the list for whatever version that was (distros are likely to be a few numbers behind the latest release). if you have a linux pc just hook it up, make sure the card is not mounted (remove card from body in advance), then do gphoto2 –list-config on a terminal.

Latest from Astrojargon for the EOS info program..

1D*/5D/10D/20D/30D/40D/50D/300D/350D/400D/450D/500D/1000D?

The shutter count information is available *only* on Canon DIGIC III/IV DSLRs *except* the 1D* series. This means that EOSInfo will display the shutter counter for the 40D, the 50D, the 450D, 500D, and the 1000D. It will also show the shutter counter for the 5DMkII, but the camera must be power-cycled before the value is updated. The shutter counter will not be displayed (or will be displayed as 0) on the 1D*, 5D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, and 400D. Its not that I have anything against the owners of those cameras, but simply that the Canon SDK does not support retrieving the shutter count for them. UPDATE (08/06/2009): Apparently, Canon has removed the facility for checking the shutter count on the 500D. More news when I learn something.

It says the exact same as my SD card photo I guess that means my refurbished 60d had no use on it. It did look brand new.

Magic Lantern firmware also shows shutter count on the 60D under debug.

Its very easy to reset the numbering in the filenames.

In forum thread FINALLY! A simple shutter count program for ALL EOS cameras Ive just posted a possible solution for you shutter count problem.

In short: We have a brand new software for OS X to read out the shutter actuations from your 60D. If you think, please check:

I dont know about Apple, Unix, Macs, etc. but the free magic lantern software works pretty good. Of course, after 4 years the OP has probably found the shutter count

Sweet stuff. Thanks @reddeercity for pointing this out. I downloaded it and tried running under Wine which shows up nicely on OS X however it just wont connect to any of my DSLRs … could be related to Wine but will have to investigate further.

im the author of this application: canon eos digital info v1.4.

I created this video tutorial to show you how to use it:

I released tow subversion, one use the Canon SDK 2.14 is for camera with Digic IV, and 5/5+. like Canon 500d, 1000d, 60d, 7d, 5d mark ii / iii…etc

The second subversion, using SDK 3.5, is for camera with digic6/6+ and newer, however it doesnt support retrieving the shutter actuation. Canon has removed some functions from there recent cameras DSLR like 80D and 5D mark IV. So, the shutter actuation reading is not supported any more due to firmware limitations. In this case, like for the Canon 5D Mark IV for example, you can try to use this subversion using sdk 3.5 instead of sdk 2.14. You can edit and read some info, but you cant read the shutter counts actuation.

If someone want to know the number of actuation on a recent camera, he must send his camera to Canon service center. Only Canon repair center can provide shutter count for these models actually. Its a shame canon wont allow its customers an accurate way to read shutter count.

DIGIC II and dual DIGIC III cameras are not supported. also EOS M (mirrorless) models are also not supported.

Im very pleased that my application is interesting and helpful.

Thanks for this info. But for a price of: $ 275.00 you can change the shutter. I also see that this software is intended for a single camera model.

In my utility I use the official sdk of canon. All functions are provided by this sdk except for reading the shutter counter which is encoded in assembler and is not a part of the Sdk functions.

Its interesting to know how they can change and reset counters of shutter and mirror lockup!

Wild shot. Seems you know your way around canon code. Would you have insights in how to get the camera calibration tags which are shown in dng files after CR2 files been processed in adobe dng converter? Or how to calculate them? Would be nice to be able to get the numbers not going through adobe dng converter.

Download EOSInfo To Check Shutter Count For Canon DSLR

Occasionally you may interested to find out how under or over utilized your Digital SLR and instead of sending them to shop for shutter count checking, there are actually some free utilities that you can rely on. If you are having a Canon DSLR such as Canon 40D, 50D, 450D and etc, EOSInfo from AstroJargon is a simple and useful utility that you can try.

EOS Info is the successor of its previous version, 40DShutterCount with some improvements:

No installation of EOSUtility is required and can use it straight in installer package.

Provides additional information like firmware version, owner, artist, copyright strings, data and time.

Doesnt matter if camera is connected or the utility is launched first, it will detect and show the shutter count.

Update shutter count in real time except 5DMkII model that needs power cycling.

Without any learning curve required, users can just install and launch the utility (with your DSLR connected to PC) and it will display the shutter count instantly. However, the shutter count information is currently working for Canon DIGIC III/IV DSLRs (except 1D models). So bear in mind that there may be error when trying to display the shutter count on certain models such as 350D, 400D, 450D, 30D and 500D, 5D, 30D due to the unsupported Canon SDK.

No doubt, this is especially useful to verify a used DSLR purchased from someone else that claimed the camera has been under-utilized. Also, it is even suitable when you want to verify if the new unit purchased from a shop is really new. While currentlyEOSInfois available for Windows Operating System PC only, Mac users will need to stick back to 40DShutterCount utility.

Goddess ofthe Dawn

EOS was the rosy-fingered goddess of the dawn. She and her siblingsHelios(the Sun) andSelene(the Moon) were numbered amongst the second-generationTitangods. Eos rose into the sky from the riverOkeanos(Oceanus) at the start of each day, and with her rays of light dispersed the mists of night.

She was depicted either driving a chariot drawn by winged horses or borne aloft on her own wings.

Eos had an unquenchable desire for handsome young men, some say as the result of a curse laid upon her by the goddessAphrodite. Her lovers includedOrion,Phaethon, Kephalos (Cephalus) and Tithonos (Tithonus), three of which she ravished away to distant lands. The Trojan prince Tithonos became her official consort. When the goddess petitionedZeusfor his immortality, she neglected also to request eternal youth. In time he shrivelled up by old age and transformed into a grasshopper.

Eos was closely identified withHemera, the primordial goddess of day. In some myths–such as the tales of Orion and Kephalos–Eos stood virtually as a non-virginal substitute forArtemis.

EOS (s), in LatinAurora, the goddess of the morning red, who brings up the light of day from the east. She was a daughter of Hyperion and Theia or Euryphassa, and a sister of Helios and Selene. (Hes.Theog.371, Hom.Hymn in Sol.ii.) Ovid (Met.ix. 420,Fast.iv. 373) calls her a daughter of Pallas. At the close of night she rose front the couch of her beloved Tithonus, and on a chariot drawn by the swift horses Lampus and Phaton she ascended up to heaven from the river Oceanus, to announce the coming light of the sun to the gods as well as to mortals. (Hom.Od.v. 1, &c., xxiii. 244; Virg.Aen.iv. 129,Georg.i. 446; Hom.Hymn in Merc.185; Theocrit. ii. 148, xiii. 11.) In the Homeric poems Eos not only announces the coming Helios, but accompanies him throughout the day, and her career is not complete till the evening; hence she is sometimes mentioned where one would have expected Helios (Od.v. 390, x. 144); and the tragic writers completely identify her with Hemera, of whom in later times the same myths are related as of Eos. (Paus. i. 3. 1, iii. 18. 7.) The later Greek and the Roman poets followed, on the whole, the notions of Eos, which Homer had established, and the splendour of a southern aurora, which lasts much longer than in our climate, is a favourite topic with the ancient poets. Mythology represents her as having carried off several youths distinguished for their beauty. Thus she carried away Orion, but the gods were angry at her for it, until Artemis with a gentle arrow killed him. (Hom.Od.v. 121.) According to Apollodorus (i. 4. 4) Eos carried Orion to Delos, and was ever stimulated by Aphrodite. Cleitus, the son of Mantius, was carried by Eos to the seats of the immortal gods (Od.xv. 250), and Tithonus, by whom she became the mother of Emathion and Memnon, was obtained in like manner. She begged of Zeus to make him immortal, but forgot to request him to add eternal youth. So long as he was young and beautiful, she lived with him at the end of the earth, on the banks of Oceanus ; and when he grew old, she nursed him, until at length his voice disappeared and his body became quite dry. She then locked the body up in her chamber, or metamorphosed it into a cricket. (Hom.Hymn. in Ven.218, Horat.Carm.i. 22. 8, ii. 16. 30; Apollod. iii. 12. 4; Hes.Theog.984; Serv.ad Virg. Georg.i. 447, iii. 328,Aen.iv. 585.) When her son Memnon was going to fight against Achilles, she asked Hephaestus to give her arms for him, and when Memnon was killed, her tears fell down in the form of morning dew. (Virg.Aen.viii. 384.) By Astraeus Eos became the mother of Zephyrus, Boreas, Notus, Heosphorus, and the other stars. (Hesiod.Theog.378.) Cephalus was carried away by her from the summit of mount Hymetttus to Syria, and by him she became the mother of Phaton or Tithonus, the father of Phaton; but afterwards she restored her beloved to his wife Procris. (Hes.Theog.984; Apollod. iii. 14. 3; Paus. i. 3. 1; Ov.Met.vii. 703, Hygin.Fab189.) Eos was represented in the pediment of the kingly stoa at Athens in the act of carrying off Cephalus, and in the same manner she was seen on the throne of the Amyclaean Apollo. (Paus. i. 3. 1, iii. 18. 7.) At Olympia she was represented in the act of praying to Zeus for Memnon. (v. 22. 2.) In the works of art still extant, she appears as a winged goddess or in a chariot drawn by four horses.

Aphrodite placed a curse upon the goddess Eos causing her to fall in love with a train of mortals–Orion, Tithonos (Tithonus), Kephalos (Cephalus) and Kleitos (Cleitus).

Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 1. 27 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :

[Kalypso (Calypso) complains to Hermes :] You are merciless, you gods, resentful beyond all other beings; you are jealous if without disguise a goddess makes a man her bedfellow, her beloved husband. So it was when Eos of the rosy fingers chose out Orion; you gods who live in such ease yourselves were jealous of her until chaste Artemis in her cloth-of-gold visited him with her gentle shafts and slew him in Ortygia [island of Delos].

Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 1. 27 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :

[The goddess Harmonia laments her love for a mortal man :] I will proclaim how Orion loved Erigeneia [Eos the Dawn], and I will recall the match of Kephalos (Cephalus); if I go to the misty sunset, my comfort is Selene herself who felt the same for Endymion upon Latmos.

Shining Eos carried off Orion for a bridegroom.

He would have been bridegroom of Eos Fairtress; since he shone lovelier than Kephalos (Cephalus), was handsomer of face than Orion, he alone outdid them with his rosy skin.

His son was Phaithon (Phaethon),afterwards ravished by Aphrodite . . . and made a guardian of her temple. Such is the tale told by Hesiod, among others, in his poem on women.

Pausanias, Description of Greece 3. 18. 10 – 16 :

[Amongst the scenes depicted on the throne of Apollon at Amyklai (Amyclae) near Sparta :] There is Kephalos (Cephalus), too, carried of by Hemera (Day) [Eos] because of his beauty.

Antoninus Liberalis, Metamorphoses 41 (trans. Celoria) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :

Kephalos (Cephalus) was a handsome and brave youth and he goddess Eos (Dawn) fell in love with him because of his beauty. She kidnapped him, keeping him at home as her lover.

Pseudo-Hyginus, Fabulae 270 (trans. Grant) (Roman mythographer C2nd A.D.) :

Those who were most handsome . . . Cephalus, son of Pandion, whom Aurora [Eos] loved. Tithonus, husband of Aurora.

When Cephalus, who was fond of hunting, had gone to the mountain in the early morning, Aurora [Eos], wife of Tithonus, fell passionately in love with him, and begged for his embrace. He refused, since he had given his promise to Procris. Then Aurora said : I dont want you to break faith, unless she has done so before you. And so she changed his form into that of a stranger, and gave him beautiful gifts to give to Procris. When Cephalus had come in his changed form, he gave the gifts to Procris and lay with her. Then Aurora took away his new appearance. When Procris saw Cephalus, she knew she had been deceived by Aurora, and fled to the island of Crete . . .

[Procris was eventually reunited with Cephalus] nevertheless out of fear of Aurora she followed him to watch him in the early morning, and hid among the bushes. When Cephalus saw the bushes stir, he hurled the unavoidable javelin, and killed his wife.

Ovid, Metamorphoses 7. 700 ff (trans. Melville) (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

Within two months after our [Kephalos (Cephalus) and Prokris (Procris)] marriage, while I [Kephalos] spread my nets to catch the antlered deer, the saffron Aurora [Eos the Dawn], above Hymettus ever-flowery peak, saw me at daybreak as the twilight fled, and carried me away against my will. And may the goddess pardon me, if I say what is true : her rosy cheeks are fair, she rules the borderlands of dark and day, she drinks the nectars honeydew, but I loved Procris, Procris ever in my heart, and Procris on my lips. I spoke of bonds of holy wedlock, of loves fresh delights, my vows so new and my deserted bride, until in rage the goddess cried : Enough of your complaining! Have your Procris! But, if I can see the future, you will rue the day you had her, and so sent me back. On my way home the goddess prophecy began to form, fear that my wife had failed her marriage vows . . . Intent on heartbreak I resolved to test her loyalty with presents. And Aurora [Eos] favoured my fears and changed my form and face (If felt the change) and so I entered Athens unrecognisable and made my way back home . . . [and attempted to seduce his wife in the form of another man. Prokris failed the test and fled him, but the two were eventually reconciled.]

I would go hunting when the suns first beams coloured the hilltops, as a young man will, roving the woods alone . . . and when my hand had had its fill of sport I used to seek the coolness of the shade and of the breeze, theaurabreathing from the chilly dales. I sought the gentleaurain the heat, I waited for theaura, for its balm, my labours rest. Come, aura, I would call, how I remember! soothe me, welcome guest, come to my breast, relieve, as is your way, the heat with which I burn. And I might add, so my fate led me on, more blandishments. You comfort and refresh me. For your sake I love the lonely places and the woods; your breath I seek for ever on my lips.

Some fool who overheard my words mistook the double sense and thought thataura(breeze) called so often was the goddess [Aurora, Eos the Dawn], and I in love. This hasty tell-tale hurried off to Procris and told in whispers my supposed offence. Love will believe too soon. In sudden grief she swooned, they told me, then, restored at last, bemoaned her misery, her cruel fate, accused my honour and, imagining a false offence, feared a mere nothing, feared an insubstantial name, poor soul, and grieved as over a true rival paramour. Yet she had doubts and in her wretchedness hoped she was wrong, refusing to accept the tale or, till her eyes had evidence convict her husband of such villainy.

Next day the gleam of dawn had banished night and out into the woods I went and found good sport and, lying on the grass, I called Come, aura(breeze), come and soothe my weariness! And suddenly, as I spoke, I seemed to hear a sound of moaning, but I called again Come, best and loveliest! A falling leaf made a slight rustle and I thought it was some lurking beast and hurled my [magic never-failing] javelin. It was my wife! Clutching her wounded breast, Ay me! Ay me! she cried. I knew her voice, my Procris voice, and like a madman rushed headlong towards the sound. And there, half-dead, her clothes blood-splattered, plucking from the wound the gift (heaven help me!) she had given me, I found her . . .

Exhausted then and dying, these few words she forced herself to murmur : By our vows of wedlock, by the gods of home and heaven, by my deserts, if I have well deserved, by my deaths cause, my own still-living love, I beg you, I implore you, not to take Aura [that is, Aurora or Eos] to be your wife in place of my. And then at last I learnt of her mistake and told her all. But what did telling help? She slipped away; what little strength was left ebbed with her failing blood; and while her eyes had power still to gaze, she gazed at me, and on my lips her lifes last breath was spent; but she looked glad and seemed to die content.

[N.B. aura was also the Greek word for breeze. Presumably the Greeks also applied it to Eos mother of the winds.]

Ovid, Heroides 4. 93 ff (trans. Showerman) (Roman poetry C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

Renowned in the forest was Cephalus, and many were the wild beasts that had fallen on the sod at the piercing of his stroke; yet he did not ill in yielding himself to Auroras [Eos] love. Oft did the goddess sagely go to him, leaving her aged spouse [Tithonos].

Ovid, Heroides 15. 87 ff (trans. Showerman) (Roman poetry C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

[Phaedra speaks of her love, the hunter Hippolytos :] Lest thou steal him in Cephalus place, I ever feared, Aurora [Eos].

Nonnus, Dionysiaca 27. 1 ff (trans. Rouse) (Greek epic C5th A.D.) :

Eos (the Dawn) had just shaken off the wing of carefree sleep (Hypnos) and opened the gates of sunrise, leaving the lightbringing couch of Kephalos (Cephalus).

She had heard that a huntsman Kephalos (Cephalus), from the country of unmothered Athena, was husband of rosecrowned Eos (Dawn).

Homer, Iliad 11. 1 ff (trans. Lattimore) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) :

Eos (Dawn) rose from her bed, where she lay by haughty Tithonos (Tithonus), to carry her light to men and to immortals.

Homer, Odyssey 5. 1 ff (trans. Shewring) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) :

The goddess Eos (Dawn), who had slept beside Lord Tithonos (Tithonus), was rising now to bring light to immortals and to mortals.

Hesiod, Theogony 984 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th or C7th B.C.) :

And Eos bare to Tithonos (Tithonus) brazen-crested Memnon, king of the Aithiopes (Ethiopians), and the Lord Emathion.

Homeric Hymn 5 to Aphrodite 218 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C7th – 4th B.C.) :

So also golden-throned (khrysothronos) Eos rapt away Tithonos (Tithonus) who was of your race and like the deathless gods. And she went to ask the dark-clouded Son of Kronos (Cronus) [Zeus] that he should be deathless and live eternally; and Zeus bowed his head to her prayer and fulfilled her desire. Too simple was Lady (potnia) Eos: she thought not in her heart to ask for youth for him and to strip him of the slough of deadly age. So while he enjoyed the sweet flower of life he lived rapturously with golden-throned Eos, Erigeneia (Early-Born), by the streams of Okeanos (Oceanus), at the ends of the earth; but when the first grey hairs began to ripple from his comely head and noble chin, Lady Eos kept away from his bed, though she cherished him in her house and nourished him with food and ambrosia and gave him rich clothing. But when loathsome old age pressed full upon him, and he could not move nor lift his limbs, this seemed to her in her heart the best counsel: she laid him in a room and put to the shining doors. There he babbles endlessly, and no more has strength at all, such as once he had in his supple limbs.

Mimnermus Fragment 4 (from Stobaeus, Anthology) (trans. Gerber, Vol. Greek Elegiac) (Greek elegy C7th B.C.) :

He [Zeus] gave Tithonos (Tithonus) an everlasting evil, old age, which is more terrible than even woeful death.

Sappho, Fragment 58 (from Papyrus) (trans. Campbell, Vol. Greek Lyric I) (C6th B.C.) :

Not possible to become ageless . . (lacuna) rosy-armed (rhodopakhos) Auos (Eos) .. carrying [Tithonos] to the ends of the earth . . yet age seized him . . immortal wife.

Ibycus, Fragment 289 (from Scholiast on Apollonius of Rhodes) (trans. Campbell, Vol. Greek Lyric II) (C6th B.C.) :

Ibykos (Ibycus) tells also how Eos carried off Tithonos (Tithonus).

Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 3. 147 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :

Now Eos, in love with Tithonos (Tithonus), kidnapped him and too him to Aithiopia (Ethiopia), and there after intercourse with him she gave birth to sons Emathion and Memnon.

Callimachus, Aetia Fragment 21 (trans. Trypanis) (Greek poet C3rd B.C.) :

But when Tito [Eos], having slept with the son of Laomedon [i.e. Tithonos], arose to set the chafing yoke on the neck of the ox [that pulled her chariot].

Lycophron, Alexandra 16 ff (trans. Mair) (Greek poet C3rd B.C.) :

Eos was just soaring over the steep crag of Phegion (Phegium) on the swift wings of Pegasos (Pegasus), leaving in his bed by Kerne (Cerne) [a fabled island in the remote East] Tithonos (Tithonus).

Diodorus Siculus, Library of History 4. 75. 4 (trans. Oldfather) (Greek historian C1st B.C.) :

Laomedon who begat Tithonos (TIthonus) and Priamos (Priam); and Tithonos, after making a campaign against those parts of Asia which lay to the east of him and pushing as far as Aithiopia (Ethiopia), begat by Eos, as the myths relate, Memnon, who came to the aid of the Trojans and was slain by Akhilleus (Achilles).

Quintus Smyrnaeus, Fall of Troy 2. 115 ff (trans. Way) (Greek epic C4th A.D.) :

[Memnon greets King Priamos (Priam) of Troy :] Telling of that strange immortality by Eos (Dawn-goddess) given to his sire [Tithonos], telling of the unending flow and ebb of Tethys, of the sacred flood of Okeanos (Oceanus) fathomless-rolling, of the bounds of Earth that wearieth never of her travail, of where the Sun-steeds leap from orient waves.

Quintus Smyrnaeus, Fall of Troy 6. 1 ff :

Rose Eos (Dawn) from Okeanos (Oceanus) and Tithonos (Tithonus) bed, and climbed the steeps of heaven, scattering round flushed flakes of splendour.

Athenaeus, Deipnosophistae 1. 6c (trans. Gullick) (Greek rhetorician C2nd to C3rd A.D.) :

Tithonos (Tithonus) longed for immortality, but now hangs in his chamber, old age has deprived him of all pleasures.

Pseudo-Hyginus, Fabulae 270 (trans. Grant) (Roman mythographer C2nd A.D.) :

Those who were most handsome . . . Tithonus, husband of Aurora [Eos].

Ovid, Metamorphoses 9. 420 ff (trans. Melville) (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

A rumbling argument arose in heaven, the gods all grumbling why others should not be allowed to grant such gifts [the rejuvenating power of the goddess Hebe]. Pallantias [Aurora-Eos] grumbled at her husbands [Tithonos] age.

Ovid, Fasti 6. 473 ff (trans.Boyle) (Roman poetry C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

Phrygian Tithonus, you complain your bride [Aurora-Eos] departs.

Ovid, Heroides 16. 199 ff (trans. Showerman) (Roman poetry C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

[Paris addresses Helene :] Do not disdain a Phrygian for your lord . . . A Phrygian was Auroras [Eos] mate [Tithonos]; yet he was carried away by the goddess who sets the last bound to the advance of night.

Aurora [Eos], the bride of Tithonus, was making ready to chase the night away.

Virgil, Georgics 1. 446 ff (trans. Fairclough) (Roman bucolic C1st B.C.) :

When Aurora (the Dawn) [Eos] rises pale, as she leaves Tithonus saffron couch.

Propertius, Elegies 1. 18B (trans. Goold) (Roman elegy C1st B.C.) :

Aurora [Eos] did not scorn Tithonus, old though he was, or suffer him to lie deserted in the halls of the Dawn: she, as she mounted her car, called the gods unkind and performed unwilling service for the world; him, as she dismounted, she oft fondled in her arms and did not first busy herself with washing her unyoked steeds; him when she embraced, resting near the land of India, she lamented that the day returned again too soon. Deeper her joy that old Tithonus lives than heavy her grief when Memnon died.

Statius, Silvae 1. 2. 43 ff (trans. Mozley) (Roman poetry C1st A.D.) :

A bold shepherd lad [Tithonos] held thy court on Dardan Ida, though warm-hearted Aurora (the Dawn) [Eos] had preferred thee, and snatched thee up and borne thee in her chariot through the air.

Nonnus, Dionysiaca 15. 279 ff (trans. Rouse) (Greek epic C5th A.D.) :

There are herdsmen that lie in heavenly beds. Rosy Tithonos (Tithonus) was a bridegroom for whom because of his fine figure lightbringer Eos stayed her car, and caught him up.

Suidas s.v. Andra Tithonon (trans. Suda On Line) (Byzantine Greek lexicon C10th A.D.) :

Andra Tithonon sparatton kai taratton kai kukon(Attacking, troubling and vexing Old Man Tithonos): That is, [doing so to] someone exceedingly old. From Tithonos (Tithonus), who grew altogether ancient and was changed into a cicada.

EOS, HER SON MEMNON & THE TROJAN WAR

Thetis, Eos, Hermes and the scales of fate, Athenian red-figure stamnos C5th B.C.,Museum of Fine Arts Boston

Homer, Odyssey 4. 190 ff (trans. Shewring) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) :

The great Antilokhos (Antiochus) whom [Memnon] the son of radiant Eos had slain.

Arctinus of Miletus, The Aethiopis Frag 1 (from Proclus, Chrestomathia 2) (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) :

[In the Trojan War, after the death of Penthesilea :] Then Memnon, the son of Eos, wearing armour made by Hephaistos (Hephaestus), comes to help the Trojans, and Thetis tells her son about Memnon. A battle takes place in which Antilokhos (Antilochus) is slain by Memnon and Memnon by Akhilleus (Achilles). Eos then obtains of Zeus and bestows upon her son immortality.

Pindar, Nemean Ode 6. 50 ff (trans. Conway) (Greek lyric C5th B.C.) :

The Aithiopian (Ethiopian) race, when mighty Memnon came not home again . . . when great Akhilleus (Achilles) stepped down from his chariot to the ground, and slew the son of shining Eos (Dawn) with his fell-pointed spear.

Aeschylus, Memnon and Psychostasia (lost plays) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) :

Aeschylus told the story of Memnon, son of Eos the Dawn), in two plays entitledMemnonandPsychostasia(The Weighing of Souls). Smyth (L.C.L.) summarises the second of these : In thePsychostasiaZeus was represented as holding aloft the balance, in the scales of which were the souls of Achilles and Memnon, while beneath each stood Thetis and Eos, praying each for the life of her son.

Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca E5. 3 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :

Memnon, son of Tithonos (Tithonus) and Eos, brought a large force of Aithiopians (Ethiopians) to Troy . . . He was himself killed by Akhilleus (Achilles).

Pausanias, Description of Greece 5. 19. 1 (trans. Jones) (Greek travelogue C2nd A.D.) :

[Amongst the scenes depicted on the chest of Kypselos (Cypselus) dedicated at Olympia :] Akhilleus (Achilles) and Memnon are fighting; their mothers [Thetis and Eos] stand by their side.

Pausanias, Description of Greece 5. 22. 2 :

By the side of what is called the Hippodamium [at Olympia] is a semicircular stone pedestal, and on it are Zeus, Thetis, and Hemera (Day) [i.e. Eos] entreating Zeus on behalf of her children. These are on the middle of the pedestal. There are Akhilleus (Achilles) and Memnon, one at either edge of the pedestal, representing a pair of combatants in position.

Quintus Smyrnaeus, Fall of Troy 2. 185 ff (trans. Way) (Greek epic C4th A.D.) :

[Memnon arrives at Troy :] The warrior-son [Memnon] of [Eos] she who brings Light to the world, the Child of Mists (Phaesphoros Erigeneia). Now swelled his mighty heart with eagerness to battle with the foe forthright. And Eos (Dawn) with most reluctant feet began to climb Heavens broad highway.

Quintus Smyrnaeus, Fall of Troy 2. 289 ff :

[In the Trojan War :] [Phereus and Thrasymedes] vainly essayed to slay him [Memnon], as they hurled the long spears, but the lances glanced aside far from his flesh : Erigeneia (the Dawn-queen) [Eos] turned them thence.

Quintus Smyrnaeus, Fall of Troy 2. 418 ff :

[Memnon addresses Akhilleus (Achilles) when they meet in battle :] Of birth divine am I, Eos (the Dawn-queens) mighty son, nurtured afar by lily-slender Hesperides, beside the River Okeanos (Oceanus). Therefore not from thee nor from grim battle shrink I, knowing well how far my goddess-mother doth transcend a Nereis (Nereid), whose child thou vauntest thee. To Gods and men my mother bringeth light; on her depends the issue of all things, works great and glorious in Olympos wrought whereof comes blessing unto men. But thine–she sits in barren crypts of brine.

Quintus Smyrnaeu.

Canon EOS 1000D

comes with a 22.2 x 14.8 mm CMOS sensor, which has a diagonal of

If you want to know about the accuracy of these numbers, click here

mm. There are approx. 10,100,000 photosites (pixels) on this area. Pixel pitch, which is a measure of the distance between pixels, is

m. Pixel pitch tells you the distance from the center of one pixel (photosite) to the center of the next.

m. The larger the photosite, the more light it can capture and the more information can be recorded.

Pixel density tells you how many million pixels fit or would fit in one square cm of the sensor. Canon 1000D has a pixel density of

These numbers are important in terms of assessing the overall quality of a digital camera. Generally, the bigger (and newer) the sensor, pixel pitch and photosite area, and the smaller the pixel density, the better the camera. If you want to see how 1000D compares to other cameras, click here.

Diagonal is calculated by the use of Pythagorean theorem:

Pixel pitch is the distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the next measured in micrometers (m). It can be calculated with the following formula:

Sensor resolution is calculated from sensor size and effective megapixels. Its slightly higher than maximum (not interpolated) image resolution which is usually stated on camera specifications. Sensor resolution is used in pixel pitch, pixel area, and pixel density formula. For sake of simplicity, were going to calculate it in 3 stages.

1. First we need to find the ratio between horizontal and vertical length by dividing the former with the latter (aspect ratio). Its usually 1.33 (4:3) or 1.5 (3:2), but not always.

Crop factor or focal length multiplier is calculated by dividing the diagonal of 35 mm film (43.27 mm) with the diagonal of the sensor.

Equivalent aperture (in 135 film terms) is calculated by multiplying lens aperture with crop factor (a.k.a. focal length multiplier).

Canon EOS 1000D equivalent aperture:

Aperture is a lens characteristic, so its calculated only for fixed lens cameras. If you want to know the equivalent aperture for Canon EOS 1000D, take the aperture of the lens youre using and multiply it with crop factor.

If your screen (phone, tablet, or monitor) is not

in diagonal, then the actual size of a sensor wont be shown correctly.
